Thunderbolt and USB4 cables

Thunderbolt and USB4 cables connect fast external SSDs, monitors and docking stations, and can charge a laptop through a single USB-C port.

Our range has over 300 models, most of them USB-C to USB-C cables, with some other connector combinations. Makers include INLINE, StarTech.com, DeLOCK and ROLINE.

How to choose a Thunderbolt or USB4 cable

Data transfer speed. Most cables in our range are rated at 40 Gbit/s (USB4 Gen 3x2), which suits Thunderbolt 3 and 4 devices. There are also 20 Gbit/s (USB4 Gen 2x2) and 80 Gbit/s (USB4 Gen 4x2) cables. A few models only run at USB 2.0 speed, 480 Mbit/s, so they are not suitable for an external SSD or a monitor.

Power delivery. Our range includes cables with USB Power Delivery up to 60 W, 100 W and 240 W. For a laptop, choose a cable rated at least as high as the charger. 100 W is enough for most laptops, and 240 W is only needed for high-power models.

Length. The longer the cable, the harder it is to hold 40 Gbit/s, so longer cables are often active, with a chip in the connector. If 0.5 or 1 m is enough, a simple passive cable is the easiest option. Only go longer when you really need the reach.

Connectors. Most cables have USB-C at both ends. Some have USB-A or USB-B at one end, and there are versions with four USB-C connectors. Check that both ends match your devices, and whether you need a plug or a socket (an extension-type cable).

Frequently asked questions about Thunderbolt and USB4 cables

Is a Thunderbolt 4 cable the same as a USB4 cable?

Not exactly, but they are closely related. Both use the USB-C connector, and a 40 Gbit/s Thunderbolt 4 cable also works with USB4 devices. USB4 cables can differ in speed (20, 40 or 80 Gbit/s), so check the rated speed before buying.

Will an ordinary USB-C cable work with a Thunderbolt device?

Usually not at full speed. Ordinary USB-C cables, especially charge-only ones, often run only at USB 2.0 speed, 480 Mbit/s. A Thunderbolt drive or monitor needs a cable rated at 40 Gbit/s or higher.

Can I charge a laptop with a Thunderbolt or USB4 cable?

Yes, as long as the cable supports USB Power Delivery at the power you need. Charging cables are commonly rated at 60 W, 100 W or 240 W. The cable rating should be at least as high as your laptop charger.

How long can a 40 Gbit/s cable be?

Passive 40 Gbit/s cables are usually short, often up to 1 or 2 m. Longer distances call for an active cable with a chip in the connector, otherwise the speed may drop. Choose the shortest cable that reaches your devices.
