Air purifiers and humidifiers for homes, bedrooms, nurseries and offices: this category covers filter-based air purifiers and room humidifiers. In our range there are over 200 models, including products from Xiaomi, Beurer, Philips, Hisense and Bosch.
They suit anyone troubled by dust, pollen, pet hair or overly dry indoor air in winter.
How to choose an air purifier or humidifier
Room size. For a purifier, check the room area the manufacturer recommends or the clean air delivery rate (CADR): a model rated for a larger room cleans a bedroom faster. For a humidifier, look at how much water it releases per hour and the size of its tank.
Filters. A HEPA filter traps fine particles such as pollen, dust and pet dander. An activated carbon filter reduces odours but does not replace HEPA. Before buying, find out how often the filter needs replacing and whether spares are easy to get.
Humidifier type. Ultrasonic humidifiers run quietly and produce cool mist, but with hard water they can leave white deposits on furniture. Steam models heat the water, so the mist is more hygienic, though they use more electricity. Evaporative humidifiers are less likely to overshoot the humidity level, but the wick or cartridge needs replacing from time to time.
Noise level. In a bedroom, the figure that matters is the sound level at the lowest speed, given in decibels (dB). A night mode that dims the display and lowers the fan speed is also useful.
Controls and upkeep. A humidistat keeps humidity at the level you set and stops the air becoming too damp. Some models can be controlled through a Wi-Fi app. A tank with a wide opening and removable parts makes cleaning easier, and a humidifier should be cleaned regularly so bacteria do not build up inside.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an air purifier at home?
An air purifier is worth considering if you have pollen allergies, keep pets or live near a busy road. It removes some of the fine particles from the air but does not replace ventilation. Choose a model with a HEPA filter and an output suited to the size of the room.
Which humidifier is best for a bedroom?
For a bedroom, an ultrasonic or evaporative humidifier is usually chosen because both run quietly. Check the stated noise level, the night mode and whether there is a humidistat. If your water is hard, filtered or distilled water is the better option.
What humidity level is considered healthy indoors?
Relative humidity of 40-60% is generally recommended for living spaces. Air that is too dry irritates the airways and skin, while air that is too damp encourages mould. A simple hygrometer, or a humidifier with a built-in sensor, is enough to monitor it.
How often should an air purifier filter be replaced?
It depends on the model, how polluted the air is and how long the purifier runs each day, so the manufacturer's instructions are the most reliable guide. Replacement is often needed every few months to once a year. Many purifiers show a reminder on the display when the filter is due.
