Modems connect a computer, router or other device to the internet through an operator's network. This category includes modems from BROVI, ZTE, Lenovo and StarTech.com for home, office or travel use.
They suit anyone who needs a main or backup connection, as well as those replacing an older device.
How to choose a modem
Connection type. Start by working out what kind of service you use: mobile internet with a SIM card (4G/LTE or 5G), a DSL telephone line or a cable network. A modem only works with its own technology, so high speed will not make up for the wrong type.
Interface. A USB modem plugs straight into a computer and is handy when travelling. A modem with an Ethernet port or Wi-Fi can serve a whole network. Check that your computer has a free USB port (type A or C), and if not, plan for an adapter.
Speed and standard. For mobile modems, look at the LTE category or 5G support. For DSL modems, check for VDSL2 support. Real-world speed is also limited by your operator's plan, so a faster modem than your plan allows will not change anything.
Compatibility. A mobile modem should support your operator's frequency bands and should not be locked to another operator. Make sure the manufacturer also provides drivers for your operating system, such as Windows 11 or macOS.

Frequently asked questions about modems
What is the difference between a modem and a router?
A modem connects to the operator's network and receives the internet signal, while a router shares it with several devices by cable or Wi-Fi. Some devices combine both functions in one case, so read the product description before buying.
Will a modem work with any SIM card?
Not always. Some mobile modems are locked to a single operator, and the device must also support your network's frequency bands. Check the product description and your operator's requirements before you buy.
Does a USB modem need drivers?
Many modern USB modems are recognised automatically, but some need software from the manufacturer. It is worth checking that the model supports your operating system, especially if you use an older version.
Can a modem be used as a backup internet connection?
Yes, a mobile modem with a SIM card can act as a backup when your main wired connection goes down. If you want the switch to happen automatically, you will need a router that supports that feature.
