Docks and hubs

This category covers laptop docking stations and USB hubs that connect a monitor, keyboard, mouse, external drive and other devices through a single cable. Our range includes Dell, Lenovo, LogiLink and Club 3D products. Some items are specialised equipment, so read the product description before you order.

How to choose a docking station or hub

Connection to the laptop. Most modern laptops use USB Type-C, and our range includes models with USB Type-C and USB 2.0 Type-C, plus one with USB 3.2 Gen 1 Micro-B. If you want to drive a monitor through the dock, the laptop's USB-C port must support video output (for example DisplayPort Alt Mode) or be a Thunderbolt port.

Number and type of ports. Count what you plug in every day and leave at least one port free. Devices in our range offer from 4 to 9 ports, and the number of USB Type-A ports runs from one to four. Video outputs and a network port also matter if you work with an external monitor or a wired connection.

Data transfer speed. Some models reach 5000 Mbit/s (5 Gbit/s), which is enough for external drives and large file transfers. A keyboard, mouse or printer will run happily over slower USB 2.0, but an external drive is awkward to use on it.

Compatibility with your laptop brand. Some Dell and Lenovo docks are made for particular laptop series, so check the list of supported models. Universal USB-C hubs and docks usually work with laptops from different makers, though the available features can vary.

Power. A dock that also charges the laptop needs a power supply with enough wattage. Hubs without their own power supply draw current from the computer, so they may struggle with power-hungry devices such as external drives.

Brands we carry

  • Dell and Lenovo: both make laptops and docks for them, so their models are often matched to the makers' own series.
  • LogiLink: known for affordable computer accessories, adapters and cables.
  • Club 3D: specialises in video adapters and cables and also makes docking stations.
  • Zebra and Honeywell: known for barcode scanners and mobile terminals, and their docks are usually made for their own devices.
  • Barco: known for professional display and meeting-room presentation systems.
  • EXSYS: known for USB, serial and other expansion cards and adapters.

Also in our range: Maiwo and models sold without a brand name.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a docking station and a USB hub?

A USB hub only adds more USB ports. A docking station usually also offers video outputs, a network port and often laptop charging, which turns a laptop into a full desk setup.

Will a docking station work with my laptop?

It depends on the laptop's port and the maker's design. Universal USB-C docks usually work with many laptops, while Dell or Lenovo docks may be limited to certain series. Check the supported models in the product description.

Can I connect a monitor through a docking station?

Yes, provided the dock has a video output and the laptop's USB-C port supports video. If the port carries data only, the monitor will not work even with a suitable dock. Check the laptop specification first.

Does a USB hub need its own power supply?

For a keyboard, mouse or memory stick, power from the computer is usually enough. For external drives or many devices at once, a hub with its own power supply is the safer choice, because weak current can cause connection drops.
