WiFi access points

WiFi access points

WiFi access points (APs) extend and stabilise a wireless network in homes, offices, hotels and warehouses. Our range includes ceiling and wall-mounted access points, mesh systems and business equipment with central management. TP-Link, Ubiquiti, HPE, LANCOM and Zyxel offer the most models, with over 450 products in total.

How to choose a WiFi access point

Wi-Fi standard and performance. For a new network, Wi-Fi 6 or newer is usually worth choosing, as it copes better when many devices connect at once. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 help when you want the extra 6 GHz band. The speed in a product name (AX1800, for example) is the sum of all connections, so a single device will see less. How many devices will connect at the same time matters more.

Power and ports. Many access points can be powered over PoE, which needs only one network cable but also a PoE switch or injector. Many models in our range have a single Ethernet LAN (RJ-45) port, while others have 2, 3, 4 or more, useful if a computer, TV or printer must connect through the same unit.

Antennas and placement. Access points with internal antennas are easier to install and blend into interiors. Models with external antennas let you aim the signal or swap the antenna, which helps in large or awkwardly laid-out spaces. Most models are designed for indoor use and operate from 0 to 40 °C, while some also handle -30 or -40 °C up to 70 °C. If the unit will go outdoors, also check its dust and water protection rating.

Management. A single access point is simple to set up on its own. With several units, a controller or cloud management keeps all settings in one place and lets devices move between units smoothly as people walk around the building. Management systems from different manufacturers are generally not compatible, so it is best to stay with one brand across the network.

Brands we carry

  • TP-Link: offers both simple home units and business-oriented Omada access points that can be run from one controller.
  • Ubiquiti: known for its UniFi system, where access points, switches and routers are managed from a single application.
  • HPE: makes business access points alongside its Aruba networking equipment for medium and large organisations.
  • LANCOM: a German manufacturer focused on business and public-sector networks.
  • Zyxel: known for its Nebula cloud management, which suits small and medium-sized businesses.
  • Grandstream: best known for IP telephony equipment, so its access points are often used alongside VoIP setups.
  • MikroTik: a Latvian manufacturer whose RouterOS software allows very detailed network configuration.
  • Cisco: one of the largest makers of enterprise networking equipment, with access points built for large networks.
  • AVM: a German manufacturer known for FRITZ! products, which are easy to fit into a home network.

Also in our range: Cudy, Netgear and Mercusys.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an access point and a router?

An access point only creates a wireless network and connects devices to an existing wired network, while a router also directs traffic and connects you to the internet. An access point cannot connect you to your provider on its own and needs a router or similar device behind it. That makes it a way to extend Wi-Fi coverage rather than a replacement for a router.

Does an access point need PoE?

No, PoE is not essential if the access point has a power socket and comes with an adapter. For a unit mounted on a ceiling or wall, though, PoE is more convenient because power and data travel over a single cable. Check which PoE standard the model supports before buying.

How many access points do I need for a home or office?

A small flat often needs just one access point, while several floors or long corridors call for at least one per floor or zone. Thick walls, concrete floors and metal structures reduce coverage. In an office, the number of people connecting at once matters as well as the floor area.

Can access points from different manufacturers work on the same network?

Yes, they can run on the same wired network, but they will usually have separate settings. Shared management and smooth handover between units generally work only within one manufacturer's equipment. If you want a single controller, buy access points from the same brand.
