Voice recorders

This category covers voice recorders and dictation devices for conversations, lectures, meetings and dictating notes, from pocket recorders to professional portable units. PHILIPS has the most models, and we also stock GRUNDIG, OLYMPUS and TASCAM. With over 30 models in our range, you can choose by the kind of work you do rather than by brand alone.

How to choose a voice recorder

Purpose. For dictation and personal notes you need a device that is easy to operate with one hand, with clear record and pause buttons. Meetings and lectures call for stereo microphones or the option to connect an external microphone, while music rehearsals and interviews are better served by a portable recorder.

Sound quality and format. For speech, a compressed format such as MP3 is usually enough and keeps files small. Uncompressed WAV keeps more audio detail, which helps with music and with recordings you plan to edit later.

Memory and power. Check for a memory card slot, because internal memory fills quickly at high quality settings. For long conferences, battery life matters, as does whether the recorder takes replaceable batteries or has a built-in rechargeable one.

Connectivity and software. Most recorders transfer files to a computer over USB, and some connect through Wi-Fi or a phone app. If one person dictates and another types, a system with dedicated dictation software and automatic file transfer saves a lot of time.

Voice recorders: frequently asked questions

Is a voice recorder better than a phone app?

A voice recorder has a dedicated microphone and physical buttons, so a call or notification will not interrupt the recording. Most recorders also last longer on a single battery and allow you to swap memory cards. A phone is fine for occasional short recordings, but a separate device is more convenient for regular work.

Which voice recorder is best for lectures and meetings?

Choose a model with stereo microphones or an input for an external microphone, so that speakers further away are still audible. Enough memory and a long battery life matter too, as these recordings often run for hours. Noise reduction can also help in busy rooms.

How long can a voice recorder record?

It depends on the memory size, the file format and the quality setting. Compressed MP3 fits many hours of speech, while uncompressed WAV takes up several times more space. With a memory card, the recording time is practically limited only by the battery.

Can voice recordings be turned into text?

Yes, if you use a transcription program or service. Professional dictation systems can send files to a computer or the cloud automatically, and some newer recorders offer automatic transcripts. Clear speech and little background noise give the most accurate results.
