Video splitters and extenders

Video splitters and extenders send one video signal to several screens or carry it further than an ordinary cable allows. Our range includes over 500 models: splitters, switches and extenders for offices, meeting rooms and home cinema setups. You will find products from DELOCK, DIGITUS, LINDY, StarTech.com and ATEN.

How to choose a video splitter or extender

Splitter, switch or extender. A splitter shows one source, such as a laptop, on several screens. A switch works the other way round: several sources share one display. An extender does not divide anything, it simply increases the distance between the source and the screen.

Connector type and resolution. Most devices of this kind work with HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI, so the connectors must match your source and displays. For a 4K screen, check that the device supports 60 Hz, as older models are often limited to 30 Hz. Protected content from streaming boxes and similar sources also requires HDCP support.

Distance and transmission method. A standard HDMI cable without signal boosting is only suitable for a few metres. Extenders that use a network cable (Cat5e or Cat6) carry the signal for several tens of metres, and fibre-optic solutions reach further still. Such an extender consists of a transmitter and a receiver, so make sure both are included.

Number of outputs and power. Splitters come with two, four, eight or more outputs. If you may add screens later, a model with spare outputs is worth considering. Active devices usually need an external power supply, so check that one is supplied. Where a colour is listed, black is the most common, but there are also white and silver models.

Brands in our range

• DELOCK: makes a very large number of cables, adapters and converters, so it is often the place to look for less common connector combinations.
• DIGITUS: a German brand from the ASSMANN group, known for network and connectivity equipment, including video extenders over network cable.
• LINDY: a company founded in Germany, known for audio-visual cables and video signal transmission equipment.
• StarTech.com: a Canadian manufacturer specialising in IT connectivity, KVM solutions and docking stations for offices.
• ATEN: known for KVM switches and professional video distribution equipment for server rooms and control centres.

Also in our range: KabelMeister, Good Connections, VALUE, S-CONN, inLine, Micro Connect and Brennenstuhl.

Frequently asked questions

Can a video splitter show a different image on each screen?

Usually not, because most splitters only duplicate the same image on every screen. If each display needs its own picture, a graphics card with several outputs or a dedicated multi-display solution is the better route. Check the product description to see whether the device mirrors the image or extends the desktop.

How long can an HDMI cable be without an extender?

A passive HDMI cable with no signal boosting generally works over a few metres, and the limit is lower for high resolutions. For longer runs, use an active cable or an extender. The exact distance depends on the cable quality and the resolution you want.

Does a video extender over network cable work through a home or office network?

Simple extenders connect directly with a network cable between the transmitter and the receiver, so they do not use your shared network. Only dedicated IP-based systems work through a network switch, and they need a suitable switch. Check which type of extender you are buying before you order.

Can a splitter be used as a switch?

As a rule, no, because a splitter sends the signal in one direction only: from one input to several outputs. If you want to connect several sources to one screen, you need a switch. Only some matrix-type models can do both jobs in one device.
