USB network cards

USB network cards, also called USB network adapters, add a wired Ethernet or wireless Wi-Fi connection to a computer that has no network port or whose port has failed. Our range includes over 1,400 products, with brands such as INLINE, ROLINE, TP-Link, StarTech.com and Lenovo.

They suit owners of thin laptops and mini PCs, as well as network administrators.

How to choose a USB network card

Connection type. A wired Ethernet adapter gives a steadier connection with lower latency, which makes it the better choice for the office, remote work and gaming. A Wi-Fi adapter is what you need when running a cable is not possible or the computer has no wireless module.

Speed. Most modern wired adapters run at 1 Gbps (Gigabit), while older Fast Ethernet models stop at 100 Mbps. If your network and internet plan go beyond 1 Gbps, a 2.5 Gbps adapter is worth considering. Real speed is always limited by the slowest link: the router, the cable or the adapter itself.

USB connector. Start by checking whether your computer has USB-A or USB-C. Gigabit speed needs at least USB 3.0, because the bandwidth of USB 2.0 (480 Mbps) is lower than 1 Gbps.

Compatibility. Check that the manufacturer lists your operating system: Windows, macOS or Linux. Some adapters work straight away, others need a driver, and certain chips are better supported on Linux.

Extra features. In a business setting Wake-on-LAN, PXE network boot and VLAN support come in handy. When choosing a Wi-Fi adapter, look at the Wi-Fi standard it supports (for example Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6) and whether it works on the 5 GHz band.

Brands in our range

  • INLINE, ROLINE: makers of IT cables, adapters and other connection accessories, with network adapters sitting alongside many other connectivity products.
  • TP-Link: a networking manufacturer known for routers as well as Wi-Fi and Ethernet USB adapters.
  • StarTech.com: specialises in connectivity, adapters and docking stations, mainly for professional IT use.
  • Lenovo: a laptop manufacturer whose accessories are usually designed around the ports on its own equipment.
  • Intel: a network chip developer whose Ethernet and Wi-Fi controllers are used in many computers and network cards.
  • Cisco: an enterprise networking manufacturer, so its products tend to suit business rather than home needs.
  • DIGITUS: a maker of network cables, switches and other networking accessories.
  • EXSYS: produces interface cards and adapters, for example for USB and serial devices.

Also in our range: METZ CONNECT, EFB-Elektronik, MicroConnect.

Frequently asked questions

Is a USB network card as fast as a built-in network port?

A Gigabit adapter connected to a USB 3.0 or newer port usually reaches a speed very close to a built-in port. On a USB 2.0 port it is limited to roughly 480 Mbps. That is why the right USB port matters.

Does a USB network card need drivers?

Many modern adapters need no driver installation, because support is already built into Windows or macOS. Some models, especially Wi-Fi adapters, require a driver from the manufacturer. It is worth checking the list of supported operating systems before buying.

Should I choose a USB Wi-Fi adapter or an Ethernet adapter?

If the computer can be connected by cable, an Ethernet adapter is the better option, as the connection is steadier and latency is lower. A Wi-Fi adapter makes sense when there is no cable or the computer has no wireless module. Check which Wi-Fi standard your router supports before you buy.

Can I use a USB network card on a laptop without an RJ45 port?

Yes, a USB-A or USB-C adapter adds an RJ45 port, so the laptop can be connected with a network cable. Choose an adapter with the connector your computer has. If you only have USB-C, pick a USB-C model or an adapter with a USB-C converter.
