Turntables

The record players category covers over 100 models: players with built-in speakers, separate turntables that connect to an amplifier or powered speakers, and retro-style music centres with a turntable. They suit anyone starting out with vinyl as well as collectors. LENCO, MUSE, DENVER, AKAI and Audio-Technica have the most models in our range.

How to choose a record player

Type of player. If you simply want to switch on and listen, choose a model with built-in speakers, as no extra equipment is needed. A separate turntable gives better sound quality: you connect your own amplifier and speakers, and can upgrade each of them later.

Drive. A belt drive absorbs motor vibration so less of it reaches the stylus, and most turntables made for home listening work this way. Direct-drive models reach playing speed faster and spin steadily, which is why DJs and people who change records often like them.

Connections. A vinyl signal is very weak and needs a phono preamplifier. A turntable with a built-in preamp can be plugged into powered speakers or any amplifier with a line input, while one without needs an amplifier with a phono input or a separate preamp. USB is handy for copying records to a computer, and Bluetooth lets you listen through wireless speakers.

Stylus and cartridge. A stylus wears out, so check that suitable replacements are sold separately. On separate turntables the cartridge can often be swapped for a better one, while on the simplest models it cannot be changed.

Frequently asked questions about record players

Does a record player need an amplifier?

A player with built-in speakers does not need one. A separate turntable must be connected to an amplifier or powered speakers, and if it has no built-in preamp it also needs a phono input or a separate preamplifier.

What is the difference between belt drive and direct drive?

In a belt drive a rubber belt turns the platter and absorbs motor vibration. In a direct drive the platter is turned straight by the motor, so speed is steadier and reached sooner, but good design is needed to keep vibration down. Both work well for home listening, and DJs more often choose direct drive.

Can I play records through a Bluetooth speaker?

Yes, if the turntable has a Bluetooth transmitter. Check that it sends sound out rather than only receiving it, because some players with Bluetooth work as a receiver for playing phone music through their own speakers.

When should I replace the stylus?

Replace it when the sound turns harsh or distorted, when you hear noise, or when the maker's stated lifespan is reached. A worn stylus damages record grooves faster, so do not wait until the sound is clearly poor.
