How to choose a smartphone

Operating system. iPhones run only iOS, while Android phones come from Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Google, HONOR and others. If you already use an Apple Watch, AirPods or a Mac, an iPhone pairs with them more easily, whereas Android gives you more models to choose from by size and features.

Update support. Without security updates a phone becomes vulnerable after a few years, so check how long the manufacturer promises updates for the specific model. Apple, Google and Samsung usually offer many years of support on their newer models.

Memory and storage. 128 GB is enough for most everyday use, but if you film a lot or keep many games installed, 256 GB or more is the safer choice. Many phones, including every iPhone, have no memory card slot, so the storage size has to be chosen at the time of purchase. On Android phones, 6 to 8 GB of RAM lets you work smoothly with several apps open.

Battery and charging. Compare battery capacity (mAh) only between phones of a similar size, because the processor and software also affect consumption. Look at the fast-charging power in watts and whether a charger is included, as some manufacturers no longer put one in the box.

Screen and camera. OLED screens show deeper blacks, and a 120 Hz refresh rate makes scrolling smoother. For photos, sensor size and image processing matter more than the megapixel count, and if you want to zoom in without losing quality, look for a model with a dedicated telephoto lens.
