Server & workstation processors

Server & workstation processors

Server and workstation processors are built for machines that run around the clock or handle heavy workloads: servers, virtualisation hosts and professional workstations. Our range has over 500 models, mostly from AMD and Intel, along with Lenovo and Supermicro. They suit both a new build and an upgrade of an existing server.

How to choose a server or workstation processor

Socket and platform. The processor must match the motherboard socket, and AMD and Intel server sockets are not interchangeable. Even different generations from the same maker often use different sockets, so check the supported processor list from the board or server manufacturer before buying. In branded servers such as Lenovo, Dell or HPE, only certain processor versions are often accepted.

Core count and clock speed. Virtualisation, databases and rendering benefit from many cores, while some applications run better with a higher single-core clock speed. Check software licensing too: some licences are charged per core, so a higher core count can raise licensing costs.

Memory and connectivity. Server processors usually support ECC memory and offer more memory channels and more PCIe lanes than desktop models. If you plan to fit several NVMe drives, network cards or multiple graphics cards, the number of lanes can matter more than the core count.

One or two processors. Not every processor works in a dual-socket board, so confirm this beforehand if you need that setup. Two processors increase the number of cores and memory channels, but they require a suitable board and the two processors usually have to be identical.

Thermal power and cooling. The thermal design power (TDP) of the largest server processors can reach several hundred watts, so a heatsink designed for the job is essential. Heatsinks in rack servers are usually passive and rely on airflow from the chassis fans, while workstations more often use active coolers.

Brands in our range

  • AMD: makes EPYC server and Ryzen Threadripper workstation processors, known for a high core count in a single socket.
  • Intel: the Xeon family is used in many servers and workstations; Xeon Scalable is aimed at servers and Xeon W at workstations.
  • Lenovo: builds ThinkSystem servers and ThinkStation workstations, so its processors are mostly meant for upgrading or expanding those systems.
  • Supermicro: specialises in server motherboards and systems, so it is worth matching a processor to the models its board supports.
  • Fujitsu: known for Primergy servers, where the processor is chosen to match the specific server model.
  • Dell, HPE: Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant are among the most widely used server lines, so choose the processor according to the exact server model.

Also in our range: Cisco, ZTE Server & Storage.

Frequently asked questions

How does a server processor differ from a desktop processor?

Server processors are designed for continuous operation and usually have more cores, memory channels and PCIe lanes, as well as support for ECC memory. Desktop models focus more on high clock speeds for everyday work and gaming. They use different sockets, so a server processor will not fit an ordinary desktop motherboard.

AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon: which should I choose?

It depends on the platform and the workload, as both families suit servers. EPYC is known for high core counts and many memory channels, while Xeon is widely supported by software vendors and server manufacturers. Base the decision on the board or server you already have, and compare results for specific models in your own applications.

Can I fit any processor into my server?

No, only models supported by the board or server manufacturer will work. The socket, BIOS version and permitted thermal power all matter. Some servers need a BIOS update before they recognise a newer processor.

How many cores does a server or workstation need?

It depends on the workload: a small file or office server needs only a few cores. In virtualisation, each virtual machine is usually allocated several cores, so add up the needs of all machines to get the total. Rendering and simulation benefit from more cores, although for some applications clock speed matters more.
