How to choose a screwdriver or bit
Drive profile. The profile must match the screw head exactly, otherwise the head wears out quickly. The most common profiles are Phillips (PH), Pozidriv (PZ), Torx (TX), hex and slotted. PH and PZ look similar but are not fully interchangeable.
Size. Each profile comes in a numbered scale, for example PH1, PH2, PH3 or TX10, TX20, TX25. A bit that is too small turns loosely and damages the head, so check which screws you use most often before buying.
Shank and impact use. Bits with a 1/4 inch hex shank fit most drill-drivers and bit holders. If you work with an impact driver, choose bits marked for impact use, which usually have a torsion zone, because ordinary bits can snap.
Insulation. Work on electrical installations calls for screwdrivers marked VDE and 1000 V. The handle and blade insulation must be undamaged, and a screwdriver with a cracked coating is better replaced.
Set or single tools. A set helps when your screws vary or you are building a first toolkit. If you use one profile every day, individual screwdrivers and spare bits in that exact size make more sense.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between PH and PZ bits?
A PZ (Pozidriv) bit has extra fine ribs between the arms of the cross, while a PH (Phillips) bit does not. This lets a PZ bit seat more precisely in a matching screw and slip out less often. A PH bit can turn a PZ screw, but the grip is poorer and the head wears faster.
Which bits should I use in an impact driver?
An impact driver needs bits marked for impact use, often with a torsion zone in the shank. This zone absorbs sudden torque spikes, so the bit is less likely to break. Ordinary bits made for hand use often fail quickly in an impact driver.
What does a VDE screwdriver mean?
A VDE screwdriver is insulated and tested for work on electrical installations up to 1000 V AC. The marking appears on the handle or blade. If the insulation is cracked or scraped, the screwdriver should no longer be used near live parts.
