Scanner cables and power supplies

Scanner cables and power supplies

Scanner cables and power supplies are for owners of barcode scanners and similar retail and warehouse equipment who need to replace a damaged lead, connect a scanner to a till or set up a new workstation.

Our range has over 180 products, mostly from Datalogic, Honeywell, Zebra and Newland.

How to choose a scanner cable or power supply

Model compatibility. Cables are often made for specific scanner series, so start by confirming the manufacturer and exact model. Compare the part number with the one printed on your old cable or given in the manual.

Interface. Most current scanners connect over USB, while older till systems use RS-232 or a keyboard wedge connection. The scanner end often has a modular connector, so an ordinary USB cable may not fit.

Length and type. A straight cable suits a scanner that stays in one place, while a coiled cable stretches and springs back, which is handy at a checkout. Measure the distance to the computer: a lead that is too long tangles, and one that is too short limits movement.

Power supply. USB scanners are usually powered through the cable itself, but an RS-232 connection or a charging cradle often needs a separate adapter. Check the voltage, current, connector type and polarity, because the wrong adapter can damage the device.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the right cable for a barcode scanner?

Match the cable to the scanner's manufacturer, model and interface. The model name or part number is usually on the label on the scanner or on the old cable. If you are unsure, first check whether the computer connects over USB or RS-232.

Will any USB cable work with a barcode scanner?

Not always. On many scanners the cable plugs into the device through a specific modular connector rather than a standard USB socket. Even similar-looking connectors can have a different pin layout, so it is safest to choose the cable by scanner model.

Does a barcode scanner need a separate power supply?

A USB scanner usually runs on the power supplied by the computer. A separate power adapter is normally needed with an RS-232 connection or when using a charging cradle. The scanner's manual states the exact requirement.

What is the difference between a straight and a coiled scanner cable?

A straight cable always stays the same length and suits a scanner that rarely moves. A coiled cable stretches and then retracts, which makes it practical at a checkout where the scanner is picked up and put down constantly. It also lies less on the counter and tangles less.
