How to choose scales
Purpose. Kitchen scales are made for ingredients, bathroom scales for body weight, and laboratory or technical scales for small or specialised quantities. One type rarely suits every job, because weight limits and accuracy differ a great deal.
Capacity and readability. Kitchen models usually weigh up to a few kilograms, while bathroom scales typically go up to 150 or 180 kg. Readability is the smallest change the display can show: the lower it is, the better you will see small differences. For spices, coffee or herbs, choose a model with a 0.1 g step.
Platform and display. Glass or stainless steel surfaces wipe clean after flour or grease. In the kitchen, check that a large bowl will not cover the display. For bathroom scales, the size and stability of the platform matter, especially on tiles.
Tare and extra functions. The tare function resets the reading to zero with a container on the platform, so you can weigh ingredients one after another in the same bowl. Body composition scales also estimate fat and muscle share and often send results to an app over Bluetooth. Those figures are approximate, so follow the trend rather than a single reading.
Power. Many scales run on batteries, and some recharge over USB. If you use them every day, a rechargeable model saves you changing batteries.

Which kitchen scales should I buy?
Choose a model with a tare function, a clear display and a readability of 1 g or finer. That is enough for baking and cooking from recipes. For small amounts such as coffee or spices, a scale with a 0.1 g step is a better fit.
Are body composition scales accurate?
They show weight accurately, but fat and muscle figures are only estimates. The measurement relies on a weak electrical current passing through the body, so hydration, meals and exercise affect the result. It works best to weigh at the same time of day and watch the change over time.
What is the tare function for?
Tare sets the display to zero with a container already on the platform, so only the food is weighed. You can add several ingredients to the same bowl, resetting to zero each time. It saves both time and washing up.
Why do my scales show different weights?
Readings change because of an uneven surface, weak batteries or a different spot on the floor. Place the scales on a hard, level surface rather than a carpet. After replacing the batteries and keeping the scales in the same place, results usually settle.
