Sanding paper and belts

Sanding paper and belts

This category covers sandpaper, sanding discs and sanding belts for wood, painted surfaces, filler and metal. They suit home DIYers and tradespeople using random orbital, delta and belt sanders. Bosch, Makita, KWB and FEIN account for most of the models in our range, which runs to more than 480 products.

How to choose sandpaper and sanding belts

Grit. The number after the letter P shows the size of the abrasive particles: the lower it is, the more aggressively the paper cuts. P40-P80 is a typical start for old paint and uneven timber, P120-P180 is usually enough before painting, and P240 or finer is used between coats of lacquer.

Shape and size. A sheet, disc or belt must match your sander exactly. Random orbital sanders take round discs (commonly 125 or 150 mm), delta sanders take triangular sheets, and belt sanders need belts of the stated width and length. Check the sander's manual or the inside of the old belt for the dimensions.

Abrasive material. Aluminium oxide suits wood and general work, while silicon carbide is often used for sanding lacquer and paint. Ceramic and zirconia abrasives are more often chosen for metal and hardwood because they stay sharp for longer.

Fixing and dust extraction. Hook-and-loop discs can be swapped in seconds, and the holes in the disc should line up with the sander's pad so that dust is extracted. When sanding paint or filler, it is worth connecting a dust extractor.

Frequently asked questions

What grit sandpaper should I use to remove paint?

P40-P80 is usually right for removing old paint. Follow it with P120 or P180 to remove deep scratches. A finer grade then finishes the surface before repainting.

How do I know what size sanding belt I need?

The width and length are given in the sander's manual, and they are often printed on the inside of the old belt as well. The new belt must match both dimensions, otherwise it will not fit the rollers or will slip.

Can discs from different brands be used on the same sander?

Yes, provided the diameter, the fixing type (hook and loop) and the hole pattern match. Holes that do not line up with the sander's pad reduce dust extraction, although sanding is still possible.

When should I replace sandpaper?

Replace it when sanding noticeably slows down, the surface starts to look glossy, or the abrasive clogs with dust or paint. Worn paper heats the surface and leaves uneven marks.
