Routers

Routers

This category covers home Wi-Fi routers, wired business routers and 4G/5G cellular routers for flats, offices and industrial sites. Our range has over 1,600 models, including TP-Link, Teltonika, MikroTik and Ubiquiti. Choose by Wi-Fi standard, type of internet connection and the number of devices you need to connect.

How to choose a router

Wi-Fi standard. Our range runs from Wi-Fi 4 to Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be), with Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 the best represented. For a new purchase, Wi-Fi 6 is a sensible minimum, as it copes better when many phones, laptops and smart home devices share the network. Wi-Fi 7 pays off when your own devices support it too.

Frequency bands. Dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) models are the most common type, while single-band 2.4 GHz routers suit only basic use. Tri-band models add a second 5 GHz band or a 6 GHz band, and 6 GHz is supported by Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 equipment. The 2.4 GHz signal passes through walls better, while 5 GHz is faster over shorter distances.

Ports. The number of LAN ports in our range goes from 1 to 8, and 4 is the most usual. Count what you will connect by cable: a computer, TV, games console, NAS. If you run short, a switch can add more ports. Also check whether the WAN and LAN ports are gigabit or faster, so they do not limit your internet speed.

Type of internet connection. If your internet comes via fibre, cable or an operator's modem, a standard router with an Ethernet WAN port will do. Where there is no wired connection, for example at a country house, a building site or in a vehicle, you need a model with a SIM card slot and a 4G or 5G module.

Where it will be used and how it is managed. At home, a simple app or browser interface is enough. For an office, shop or industrial site, look for VPN, VLAN, firewall rules and remote management. If the router will sit in a cold or damp room, check its operating conditions: many models are rated for 0 to 40 °C and 10 to 90% humidity.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a router and an access point?

A router connects your local network to the internet and assigns addresses to devices, while an access point only extends Wi-Fi on an existing wired network. Many home routers do both jobs. You need an access point when the main router's signal does not reach the farther rooms.

Is a Wi-Fi 7 router worth buying?

It is, if you already have or will soon buy devices that support Wi-Fi 7 and your internet connection is faster than 1 Gbit/s. Otherwise Wi-Fi 6 is often enough. Older devices connect to a Wi-Fi 7 router, but they do not gain the new features.

Which router suits internet over a SIM card?

You need a 4G or 5G router with a SIM card slot. Before buying, check that it supports your operator's frequencies and has connectors for external antennas, as these affect signal quality in remote places.

How many LAN ports should a router have?

Four is usually enough, and models with four ports are the largest group in our range. Count every device you will connect by cable, such as a computer, TV and NAS. If you run out of ports, add a switch rather than replacing the router.
