How to choose mounting rails and kits
Compatibility with your equipment. Start by checking whether the device needs its manufacturer's own rails. Cisco, Lenovo and other server and network makers often supply kits for a specific model, while universal rails suit standard-sized chassis.
Cabinet depth. Telescopic rails adjust only within a set range, so compare it with the distance between the front and rear mounting profiles of your cabinet. Rails that are too short will not reach the rear posts.
Fixed or sliding rails. Fixed rails suit lighter equipment such as switches. Sliding rails let you pull a server out of the cabinet to inspect it or replace a component, which helps with servers that are serviced often.
Load and mounting holes. For a heavy server, check the rated load of the rails, not just their length. Cabinet profiles have square, round or threaded holes, so the kit needs matching nuts and screws.
Height and cabinet size. Equipment height is measured in rack units (U), and 1U is 44.45 mm. Also confirm that the cabinet is 19-inch: 10-inch cabinets need different kits.

Frequently asked questions about mounting rails
What is the difference between fixed and sliding server rails?
Fixed rails hold equipment in one position, while sliding rails let you pull it out of the cabinet without unmounting it. Sliding rails are more convenient for heavy servers that you open regularly. Fixed rails are usually enough for switches and lighter equipment.
Do the same rails fit every server?
No. Many manufacturers sell kits for specific server lines, because chassis width, mounting points and the locking mechanism differ. Before buying, compare the rail part number with your server model.
How do I measure cabinet depth when choosing rails?
Measure the distance between the inner sides of the front and rear mounting profiles, not the outside depth of the cabinet. The result must fall within the adjustment range stated by the rail manufacturer. Leave room for cables behind the equipment as well.
What are cage nuts used for?
Cage nuts clip into the square holes of a cabinet profile and provide a thread for the screw. You need them when the profiles have no threaded holes. If the holes are already threaded, screws alone are enough.
