RAID and HBA controllers

RAID and HBA controllers

RAID and HBA controllers are for servers, workstations and storage builds that need more drive connections or several drives combined into one array. Our range is mostly PCI Express expansion cards, along with some M.2 and PCI models. You will find controllers from Broadcom, Dell, Lenovo, HP Enterprise and other manufacturers.

How to choose a RAID or HBA controller

RAID or HBA. A RAID controller combines drives into an array itself and handles the redundancy calculations. An HBA simply passes the drives to the operating system, which suits ZFS, TrueNAS and virtualisation setups where software manages the disks. Some RAID controllers can be switched to HBA mode, but this depends on the specific model.

Drive type and connectors. Check whether the controller supports SATA, SAS or NVMe drives and how many can be attached directly or through an expander. Connectors and cables differ between models, so it is best to choose the cables together with the controller.

RAID levels and cache. RAID 1, 5, 6 and 10 are the most widely used, and the level available depends on the number of drives. Controllers with cache write data faster, and battery or capacitor protection helps preserve cached data if the power suddenly fails.

Host interface. Most controllers of this kind fit a PCI Express slot, and our range includes x8 models. Make sure the slot is free and that the case has room for a card with a full-height or low-profile bracket. A smaller number of controllers use M.2 or the older PCI interface.

Server compatibility. Controllers from Dell, HP Enterprise, Lenovo or Fujitsu are often made for specific server families and do not always work in other makers' hardware. Compare the model code with the server documentation before buying.

Brands we carry

  • Broadcom and LSI: LSI created the MegaRAID family, which Broadcom now continues alongside its RAID and HBA controllers.
  • Dell: PERC (PowerEdge RAID Controller) cards are made for Dell PowerEdge servers.
  • Lenovo and IBM: IBM was known for ServeRAID controllers, and Lenovo, which took over IBM's x86 server business, offers controllers for its ThinkSystem servers.
  • HP Enterprise: Smart Array controllers are designed for ProLiant servers.
  • Fujitsu: PRAID controllers are made for Fujitsu PRIMERGY servers.
  • Microchip: the company owns the Adaptec RAID and HBA lines, such as SmartRAID.
  • StarTech.com: expansion cards and adapters that add extra drive connections to a simpler computer.

Also in our range: InLine and other manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a RAID controller and an HBA?

A RAID controller combines drives into an array and manages data protection itself, while an HBA presents each drive to the system as it is. Choose an HBA when software such as ZFS manages the disks. A RAID controller suits those who want a hardware array without extra configuration in the operating system.

Do ZFS or TrueNAS need a RAID controller?

No, these systems generally work best with an HBA or a controller switched to HBA mode. ZFS monitors drive health and data integrity itself, so a hardware RAID array between the system and the disks can get in the way.

Which RAID level should I choose?

It depends on the number of drives and your goal. RAID 1 needs at least two drives and keeps data if one fails. RAID 5 needs three drives, while RAID 6 and RAID 10 need at least four: RAID 6 survives two drive failures, and RAID 10 offers higher speed. RAID is not a backup, so important data should also be copied elsewhere.

Will a Dell, HP or Lenovo controller work in another server?

Not always. Server makers' controllers often depend on specific firmware and slot types, so they may not work in another server or may lack some features. The safest approach is to check the controller and server model compatibility in the manufacturer's documentation before buying.
