How to choose a thermostat or heating control
Type of device. A radiator thermostat head replaces the existing manual head and controls a single radiator, so it suits wet heating systems with several radiators. A room thermostat or controller connects to the boiler or a heating zone and controls the whole circuit. If your home has both radiators and underfloor heating, you will often need both types.
Heating system. Start by establishing whether you heat with a gas or electric boiler, a heat pump or district heating. For radiator heads, check the valve connection: many valves used in Europe have an M30x1.5 thread, and adapters for other types are often included. For a controller, what matters is whether the boiler has a simple switch contact and what load the relay can handle.
Connection standard. Thermostats use different wireless standards, for example Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth or KNX. Wi-Fi models usually need only your home router, while others require a hub or gateway. It is worth sticking to one standard throughout the home so that the devices work together.
Smart home compatibility. If you use Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Home Assistant, check that the manufacturer lists support for your platform. It also helps to know whether the thermostat can still be controlled locally when the internet connection drops.
Control features. Weekly schedules, open-window detection and frost protection save more than remote control alone. For radiator heads, check the battery type and whether there is a manual dial, so you can change the temperature without a phone.

Does a smart thermostat save energy?
Yes, it can reduce heating costs when the temperature is lowered while rooms are unoccupied. Schedules, open-window detection and room-by-room control all help with this. The result depends on the building, the heating system and your habits.
Can I fit a radiator thermostat myself?
In most cases, yes, because only the head is replaced and no water needs to be drained. You remove the old head and screw on the new one, using an adapter if necessary. Controllers wired to a boiler or mains voltage are best left to an electrician.
Do I need a hub or gateway?
It depends on the connection standard. Wi-Fi devices usually connect straight to your home router. Zigbee, Z-Wave or DECT systems need a central hub or a compatible router.
What is the difference between a radiator thermostat and a room thermostat?
A radiator thermostat controls the valve of one radiator, so each room can have its own temperature. A room thermostat measures the temperature at one location and switches the whole heating circuit on or off. Many homes use both together.
