Smart lighting

Smart lighting

Smart lighting covers bulbs, LED strips and their controllers, relay modules and switches that you operate from a phone, by voice or on a schedule. It suits anyone who wants adjustable brightness and colour temperature, or who wants to automate lighting at home or in an office. Our range has over 140 products, including MiBoxer, OSRAM, MDT, Yeelight and Shelly.

How to choose smart lighting

Connection standard. Wi-Fi devices connect straight to your router and need no extra hub, but a large number of them can load a home network. Zigbee systems usually need a central hub, yet they cope better when there are many lights. KNX is meant for building automation and is normally designed and installed by specialists.

Product type. A smart bulb makes sense when you already have a light fitting with the right cap. An LED strip needs a power supply and a controller. A relay module fitted behind a switch turns an existing light smart, but that job is best left to an electrician.

Light properties. Check the cap (for example E27 or GU10), the brightness in lumens and the white tone: warm light around 2700 K suits a living room, cooler light around 6500 K suits a desk. Full RGB colour is mainly for decorative lighting, while adjustable white is useful far more often day to day.

Voice assistant compatibility. If you plan to use voice control, make sure the product works with Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Apple Home. Systems from different makers do not always work together, so it is easier to stay within one ecosystem.

Manual control. A smart bulb stops responding if the wall switch is turned off. If your household is used to the switch, choose a relay behind the switch or a bulb with a remote control.

Brands we carry

  • MiBoxer: known for LED strip controllers and remotes for RGB and adjustable-white strips.
  • OSRAM: a long-established German maker of light sources and luminaires.
  • MDT: makes KNX building automation devices such as actuators and push-button switches.
  • Yeelight: offers smart bulbs and light strips that are controlled through its own app.
  • Shelly: famous for small Wi-Fi relay modules that fit behind an existing switch.
  • Philips Hue: a Zigbee-based lighting system that often uses a separate Hue Bridge hub.
  • eQ-3 and Busch-Jaeger: German manufacturers, the first behind the Homematic IP system and the second known for switches and building automation equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a smart bulb need a hub?

Not always. Wi-Fi bulbs connect directly to your router, and Bluetooth bulbs are controlled from a phone but only over a short distance. Zigbee systems, such as Philips Hue, often need a separate hub.

Does smart lighting work without internet?

Some of it does. Systems with a local hub and KNX equipment can run without an internet connection. Remote and voice control of most Wi-Fi bulbs stops without internet, although some can still be controlled on the local network.

How do I choose a smart bulb by cap type?

Look at the cap of your existing light fitting, for example E27 or GU10, and choose the same one. Then compare the lumen output with your old bulb so the room does not end up dimmer.

Can I install a smart relay myself?

Relays connect to the 230 V mains, so a qualified electrician should fit them. Before buying, check whether the switch box has a neutral wire, because not every module works without one.
