This category covers alarm systems for flats, houses and small businesses: hub kits, door and window sensors, motion detectors and sirens. Our range includes over 150 models, with products from ABUS, AJAX, YALE and Shelly among others.
Some systems are controlled through a phone app, while others work as local protection with a loud siren.
How to choose an alarm system
System type. Wireless systems are quicker to install and suit rented homes, because no cables need to be run. Wired systems are more common in new builds, where cabling can be prepared in advance. Whichever you choose, make sure you can add more sensors later.
Sensors and protected zones. Door and window contacts guard the entrances, while a motion detector watches the room inside. If you have pets, pick a detector that ignores small animals or mount it higher up. Smoke, water leak and glass break sensors cover other risks, not just break-ins.
Connectivity and power. Check whether the control unit connects over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or a mobile network, and whether it has a backup battery. That battery keeps the system running during a power cut. Battery-powered sensors need new cells from time to time, so find out how the system warns you when they run low.
Siren and notifications. An indoor siren is usually enough in a flat, but a house or office benefits from an outdoor siren visible from the street. Phone notifications are useful when you are away, though they depend on an internet or mobile connection.
Compatibility. If you already have a smart home system, check whether the manufacturer states compatibility with it or with voice assistants. Sensors from one manufacturer do not always work with another brand's control unit.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a wireless and a wired alarm?
A wireless alarm communicates by radio, so it can be fitted without cabling and moved easily to another home. A wired alarm is connected with cables, which makes installation harder, but its sensors do not need battery changes. For a flat or rented home, a wireless system is usually the simpler choice.
Does an alarm work during a power or internet outage?
Many control units have a backup battery, so the system keeps working for a while after a power cut. If the internet goes down, the siren normally still sounds, but app notifications may not reach your phone unless there is a mobile network backup. Check the details of the specific model.
Can I install an alarm system myself?
Yes, wireless systems can usually be installed by the owner: sensors are fixed with adhesive or screws and paired with the control unit through an app. A wired system generally needs an electrician or security installer. Read the manufacturer's instructions before you start.
How many sensors does a flat need?
A flat usually needs a control unit, a door sensor at the entrance, a motion detector in the hallway and a siren. If the flat is on the ground floor or has a balcony, window sensors are worth adding. Choose a system that you can expand later.
