Server software

Server software

Server software covers Windows Server operating systems, client access licences (CALs), email and collaboration software, databases, management and security tools, and development software. It suits businesses and IT administrators who are setting up or expanding server infrastructure.

Our range includes over 5000 items, mostly from Microsoft, along with HPE, Trend Micro and Lenovo.

How to choose server software

Edition. Windows Server Standard suits a physical server or light virtualisation, as it lets you run two virtual machines on each licensed server. Datacenter is meant for heavy virtualisation, where virtual machines are numerous and change often.

Licensed cores. Recent Windows Server versions are licensed by processor core, not by the number of processors. A server normally needs at least 16 core licences, so count the physical cores across all processors before you buy.

Client access licences (CALs). On top of the server licence, every user (User CAL) or device (Device CAL) connecting to the server needs its own CAL. User CALs are easier when people connect from several devices, while Device CALs work out cheaper when several employees share one PC across shifts. Remote desktop services need separate RDS CALs. Our range includes over 2300 access licences.

OEM or standalone licence. An OEM licence is usually tied to the server it was bought with and cannot be moved later. If you plan to replace the server or migrate to different hardware, choose a licence without that restriction.

Compatibility. The CAL version must not be older than the server operating system version. Also check that your email, database or virtualisation software supports the operating system you have chosen.

Server software brands we carry

  • Microsoft: the maker of Windows Server, as well as the SQL Server database and Exchange Server mail platform, which is why most of our range comes from this manufacturer.
  • HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise): known for ProLiant servers and iLO remote management, so its software is mostly used to manage these servers.
  • Trend Micro: a cybersecurity company known for protecting servers and cloud workloads.
  • Lenovo: builds ThinkSystem servers, and Lenovo ISG is its server and data centre division.
  • Dell (Dell EMC): known for PowerEdge servers and storage systems.

You will also find software from HP Inc. and Kofax. The category includes Windows Server operating systems (over 800), management and security software, email and collaboration tools, development tools, database software and a small selection of virtualisation and Linux systems.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need CALs for Windows Server?

Yes, in most cases. Besides the server licence itself, every user or device that connects to Windows Server must hold a client access licence. Always check the exact terms for the version you have chosen.

What is the difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter?

The main difference is virtualisation rights. Standard lets you run two virtual machines on each licensed server, while Datacenter allows an unlimited number. Datacenter is therefore worth considering only when you run many virtual machines.

What is the difference between a User CAL and a Device CAL?

A User CAL is assigned to a person, who can then connect from any number of devices. A Device CAL is assigned to one device that several people may use. The first usually suits staff who work on a PC, phone and tablet, the second a shared workstation used in shifts.

How many core licences does Windows Server need?

You generally need to license all physical cores in the server, with a minimum of 16 per server. For example, a server with two 8-core processors is covered by the minimum 16-core pack. If it has more cores, you must buy additional core licences.
