Windows Server operating systems

This category contains Windows Server operating system licences for businesses, IT administrators and system integrators who run file, application, database or virtualisation servers. Most of the range comes from Microsoft, with OEM versions and products from HPE, Dell and Lenovo also available.

With over 800 products, you can compare editions and versions in one place.

How to choose a Windows Server licence

Edition. Standard suits physical servers and light virtualisation: it allows two virtual machines per licensed server. Datacenter allows an unlimited number, so it is meant for heavily virtualised hosts. Essentials is aimed at small businesses because it has a cap on the number of users (up to 25).

Version. Check the year in the product name, for example 2019, 2022 or 2025. Newer releases receive security updates for longer, while some older business applications are certified only for a specific version, so check their requirements first.

Core count. Windows Server is licensed per physical processor core, with a minimum of 16 core licences per server (8 per processor). Add up all the cores in the server and buy the matching number of core packs.

Client access licences (CALs). The server licence does not give users the right to connect: each user or device generally needs a CAL, and remote desktop services need RDS CALs on top. Make sure the quantity matches your headcount or device count.

OEM or another licence type. An OEM licence is tied to the hardware, is usually bought with a new server and normally cannot be moved to another machine. If you expect to replace the server soon, consider a different licensing type.

Brands we carry

  • Microsoft: the developer of Windows Server, with both standard and OEM versions in this category.
  • HPE: maker of ProLiant servers, whose hardware is often bought with an OEM licence.
  • Dell and Dell EMC: maker of PowerEdge servers, which are also commonly paired with OEM licences.
  • Lenovo: maker of ThinkSystem servers, offering Windows Server licences alongside its hardware.
  • Acronis: known for backup and data recovery software.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Windows Server Standard and Datacenter?

The main difference is the number of virtual machines. Standard allows two virtual machines per licensed server, while Datacenter allows an unlimited number. If your server runs only a few virtual machines, Standard is usually enough.

Do I need extra licences for Windows Server?

Yes, usually. Besides the server licence, each user or device that connects needs a client access licence (CAL), and remote desktop services also require RDS CALs. Always check the exact requirements for the version you choose.

How many core licences do I need to buy?

You must license every physical core in the server, with a minimum of 16 per server. Each processor must also be licensed for at least 8 cores. A server with a single 6-core processor therefore still needs 16 core licences.

Can an OEM licence be moved to another server?

Normally not. An OEM licence is tied to the hardware it was first installed on, so replacing the server usually means buying a new licence. If you plan to change hardware, check the licence terms before you buy.
