Screws and cage nuts

Screws and cage nuts

This category covers screws, cage nuts, washers and other small fixings for mounting equipment in server cabinets and 19-inch racks. It suits anyone building a new rack as well as those adding to an existing one. Our range has over 160 products, with SCHROFF, StarTech.com, Rittal and EFB-Elektronik among the main manufacturers.

How to choose rack mounting hardware

Thread size. Many 19-inch racks use an M6 thread, but M5 and imperial threads also exist. Before buying, check which screws or nuts came with the cabinet itself.

Fixing method. Cabinets with square holes need cage nuts, which clip into the hole and hold the screw. If the rack rails are already threaded, cage nuts are unnecessary and matching screws are enough.

Length and washers. The screw must pass through the device's mounting ear and engage fully with the nut without sticking out far. Plastic washers protect painted surfaces from scratches, which helps when equipment is removed and refitted often.

Material and colour. Our range includes black, silver, metallic and stainless steel parts. Black suits black cabinets and open racks where screw heads are visible, while stainless steel is worth choosing for damper rooms.

Quantity and sets. A server or switch usually needs four screws with nuts, and a full rack can take dozens. Sets are convenient because every part is the same size and fits together.

Frequently asked questions about rack screws and fixings

What size screws fit a 19-inch server rack?

M6 screws are the most common, but it depends on the specific cabinet. Some racks use M5 or imperial threads. Check the thread of your existing nut or rail and choose the same one.

What are cage nuts used for?

A cage nut clips into a square hole in the rack rail and provides a thread for the screw. It lets you move equipment to a different height and replace a damaged nut without changing the whole rail.

Can I use ordinary screws instead of rack screws?

Not always. The thread, length and head must match the nut and the device's mounting hole. A wrong screw can damage the thread or hold the equipment loosely, so parts made for racks are the safer choice.

How many screws do I need to install one server?

Usually four, two on each side of the front panel. Heavier servers are also supported by rails, which need their own fixings. It is sensible to buy a few more than one device requires.
