How to choose rack parts
Standard and dimensions. Most rack accessories are made for 19-inch equipment, with height measured in rack units (U). Check how many free U remain in the cabinet and measure the usable depth, because a shelf or rail has to fit together with the cables behind the device.
Load and mounting. Fixed shelves suit network gear or small power units, while sliding shelves are easier when you need to reach the device often. Look at the stated load rating and whether the kit includes screws and cage nuts, as the type depends on the cabinet.
Airflow and cables. Cover empty U spaces with blanking panels so hot air does not circulate back to the equipment intakes. Cable management panels and brush plates keep wiring tidy, and perforated shelves do not block the airflow.
Compatibility with the cabinet. Universal 19-inch parts fit most racks, but doors, side panels and plinths are usually made for a specific series. Choose these by cabinet manufacturer and model, for example Rittal or Triton.

What does U mean in a server rack?
U is the standard rack unit of height, equal to 44.45 mm. Cabinet capacity is given in U, for example 42U, and each device takes one or more U. Leave some spare room for expansion and cabling when you plan.
What are blanking panels for?
Blanking panels cover empty U spaces at the front of a rack so that air flows through the equipment rather than around it. They also prevent accidental contact with cables and connectors and give the cabinet a tidier look.
Do Rittal or Schroff parts fit racks from other manufacturers?
Standard 19-inch front-mounted parts, such as shelves or blanking panels, usually fit any cabinet that follows the standard. Doors, side panels and internal profiles generally only suit cabinets from the same series. Compare dimensions and mounting holes before you buy.
Which shelf should I choose for a server rack?
