KVM and video switches

KVM and video switches

KVM switches let you control several computers or servers from one monitor, keyboard and mouse, while video switches route several video sources to a single screen. Our range has over 50 models for offices, server rooms and home workstations. Main manufacturers include ATEN, StarTech.com, Lenovo and LogiLink.

How to choose a KVM switch

Number of ports. Count the computers you need to control and leave at least one spare port. Most KVM switches have 2, 4, 8 or 16 computer ports, and larger server-room models can be cascaded.

Video interface and resolution. The switch's video ports must match both your computers' outputs and your monitors. Most models in our range use HDMI or VGA, and there are also DVI-I and DisplayPort versions. If you use a 4K monitor, check which resolution and refresh rate the switch supports, as older models may not pass them through.

Keyboard and mouse connections. Modern computers mostly connect over USB, and USB models make up most of our range. For older equipment there are switches with PS/2 or both connector types. Video switches have no keyboard or mouse ports, because they only route the picture.

Control method. Simple switches change channel with a button or keyboard hotkeys. If you need to reach servers from another room or building, choose a KVM over IP model, which lets you control the equipment across a network.

Operating conditions and mounting. In a server room, the permitted operating temperature and humidity matter. Many models in our range work from 0 to 40 °C, and some up to 70 °C. Switches for server racks fit a 19-inch rack, while others sit on a desk.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a KVM switch and a video switch?

A KVM switch routes the picture, keyboard and mouse, so one set of peripherals controls several computers. A video switch routes only the video signal, for example several HDMI sources to one screen. If you also need to share the keyboard and mouse, choose a KVM switch.

Which switch do I need for two computers and one monitor?

A two-port KVM switch whose video connector matches your monitor and computers is enough. Check that it supports your monitor's resolution and that its keyboard and mouse ports are USB. You will also need a cable for each computer if none are included.

Does a KVM switch work with 4K monitors?

Yes, but only if the specific model supports 4K and the refresh rate you want. This is stated in the technical specifications. Cables matter too, since an unsuitable cable can limit the resolution or cause a flickering picture.

What is KVM over IP?

KVM over IP is a switch that lets you control servers or computers across a network as if you were sitting in front of them. It is useful for server rooms and remote maintenance. Basic desktop switches do not offer this.
