Access points

Access points

Wi-Fi access points for offices, shops, hotels, schools, warehouses and larger homes: ceiling and wall units, desk models and weather-resistant outdoor devices. Our range of over 160 models includes Cisco, HP Enterprise, TP-Link, Ubiquiti and MikroTik. They suit anyone who needs stronger or wider wireless coverage than a single router can provide.

How to choose an access point

Wi-Fi standard and capacity. For a new network, choose Wi-Fi 6 or newer, as it copes with many simultaneous devices better than Wi-Fi 5. Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 also use the 6 GHz band, which only helps if your phones and laptops support it. The speed printed on the box is a combined theoretical figure, so the number of users a unit can serve is a more useful guide.

Power and cabling. Most business access points are powered over Ethernet (PoE), so a single cable carries both data and power. Check that your switch or injector supports the PoE standard the model needs. In our range, models with listed ports have between 1 and 4 RJ-45 ports, and many have just one. A spare port is handy for a printer or IP phone placed next to the access point.

Management. One or two access points are usually fine with a standalone web interface. With more, a controller or cloud management saves time: network names, channels and updates are set in one place, and devices move between access points without dropping the connection. Controllers generally work only with the same manufacturer's equipment, so mixing brands is best avoided.

Mounting and conditions. Our range includes models for ceiling, wall, desk and pole mounting, with ceiling and wall units the most numerous. An operating temperature of 0 to 40 °C is enough indoors, but some models work from -40 to 70 °C, which suits outdoor sites and unheated warehouses. Most access points have internal antennas, while external ones are useful when the signal needs to be aimed in a particular direction.

Access point FAQ

What is the difference between an access point and a router?

An access point adds wireless connectivity to an existing wired network, while a router connects your local network to the internet and assigns addresses. An access point is normally plugged into a router or switch with an Ethernet cable. This lets you extend Wi-Fi coverage without needing a second internet connection.

How many access points do I need for an office or home?

The exact number depends on floor area, wall materials and how many people connect. As a general rule, one unit often covers a few rooms or a small office floor, but concrete walls reduce coverage considerably. Where many people work at once, several access points spread out work better than one faster unit.

Does an access point need PoE?

PoE is not mandatory, but it is very convenient. It lets you mount the access point where there is no power socket, because power arrives over the same cable as data. If your switch does not support PoE, you can use a separate PoE injector or, where the model allows it, an ordinary power adapter.

Can I use an access point outdoors?

Yes, but only a model designed for outdoor use. Such a device has protection against moisture and dust and a wider operating temperature range. An indoor access point installed outside may fail quickly.
