Presenters

Presenters

Presentation clickers are wireless remotes that let you change slides from a distance, point with a laser and control a talk while standing away from your laptop. They suit teachers, lecturers, managers and anyone who regularly gives reports or training sessions. The main types are simple slide-advance remotes, models with a red or green laser, and clickers with a timer and vibration alert.

How to choose a presentation clicker

Connection type. Most clickers use a small USB receiver on the 2.4 GHz band, while some use Bluetooth and need no receiver. If your laptop has only USB-C ports, choose a Bluetooth model or a clicker with a USB-C receiver.

Operating range. Around 10 metres is enough for a small meeting room, while larger halls call for 20 metres or more. The range a manufacturer quotes is measured in open space, so real-world distance is often shorter.

Laser pointer. A red laser is standard and works well in a dimmer room. A green laser is easier to see against light walls and bright screens, though these clickers usually cost more. If you present on an interactive board or a large TV, you may not need a laser at all.

Extra features. A vibrating timer helps you keep to your slot without glancing at a watch. Some clickers add a screen blackout button, volume control or mouse cursor control. Pick only what you will really use, since a simpler remote is easier to operate without looking.

Power and size. Clickers with AAA batteries last for months, and replacements are easy to find. Rechargeable USB-C models are convenient for daily use but need a charger when flat. For travel, a smaller, pen-sized clicker is easier to carry.

Brands and what to know about them

  • Peripheral makers: companies that also produce mice and keyboards often offer clickers with a long range and a sturdy USB receiver.
  • Office equipment makers: their clickers tend to be simpler, with slide and laser buttons, built for everyday use in meeting rooms.
  • Lesser-known brands: these often provide the basic function at a lower cost, but check compatibility with your operating system before buying.

Specific manufacturers will be listed once products are added to this category.

Frequently asked questions about presentation clickers

How do you connect a presentation clicker to a computer?

Usually you plug the small receiver into a USB port and the clicker works straight away. Bluetooth models are paired in your computer's Bluetooth settings and need no receiver. Extra software is normally not required.

Does a presentation clicker work with Mac and Windows?

Most clickers work with both, because the computer sees them as an ordinary keyboard. Still, check the manufacturer's compatibility notes before buying, especially for extra features such as cursor control.

What range is enough for a clicker?

About 10 metres is enough for a room of up to 20 seats. For large halls, choose a clicker rated for 20 metres or more, as the real distance is often shorter than the quoted one.

Is a red or green laser better?

A green laser is easier to see in a bright room and on bright screens, because the human eye is more sensitive to green light. A red laser costs less and is enough for darker rooms or small meetings.
