The ergonomic and vertical mice category has over 200 models: vertical mice, trackballs, centre-bar devices and conventional mice with an ergonomic shape. They suit anyone who spends long hours at a computer and wants less strain on the wrist and forearm. Brands include Bakker Elkhuizen, Contour, R-Go Tools, Logitech and Evoluent.
How to choose an ergonomic or vertical mouse
Type of mouse. A vertical mouse holds your hand in a handshake-like position, so the forearm does not twist inwards as it does with a flat mouse. A trackball stays in one place and the pointer is moved with the thumb or fingers, which helps when desk space is tight. Our range includes standard scroll wheels as well as rings, rollerbars and touch scrolling.
Handedness and hand size. Most models are right-handed, but there are also ambidextrous mice and some left-handed versions. A vertical mouse that is too large for a small hand makes you stretch your fingers, so check the size before settling on the shape.
Connection. You will find RF wireless (with a USB receiver), Bluetooth, and wired USB Type-A and USB Type-C mice. Models that combine RF and Bluetooth let you work with several devices, and Bluetooth does not use up a USB port on a laptop.
Power. Battery-powered mice give you a tidier desk, but you have to replace or charge the cells. A wired mouse avoids that. Some models work both ways, so you can plug in a cable when the batteries run low.
Buttons and sensor. Mice with 5 or 6 buttons are the most common in our range. The extra buttons usually handle browser back and forward or programmable shortcuts. An optical sensor works on most surfaces, while laser sensors are often chosen for more difficult ones.

Frequently asked questions
Does a vertical mouse reduce wrist strain?
For many people it does, because the forearm stays in a more natural position without twisting inwards. It is not a treatment for existing health problems, and persistent pain is a reason to see a doctor. Expect a few days of getting used to the new shape.
What is the difference between a trackball and a vertical mouse?
A trackball stays still on the desk and you move the pointer by rolling a ball with your thumb or fingers. A vertical mouse is still moved across the surface, but your hand is turned on its side. Trackballs suit cramped desks, while vertical mice are usually quicker to get used to.
Are there ergonomic mice for left-handed users?
Yes, our range includes some left-handed models, although right-handed mice are more common. Left-handed users can also choose an ambidextrous mouse with a symmetrical shape. Check the product description to see which hand a mouse is designed for.
Which ergonomic mouse is best for the office and which for gaming?
For the office, a wireless or wired mouse with 5 or 6 buttons and an optical sensor is usually enough. Ergonomic mice made for gaming are fewer in number, but our range includes some. Gamers should look for a wired connection or a fast RF receiver and comfortable side buttons.
