DVI and VGA cables

DVI and VGA cables

DVI and VGA cables connect monitors, projectors and other displays to computers and graphics cards that have these ports. Our range has over 400 models: DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A cables, VGA (D-Sub) cables and extension leads. Brands include DELOCK, INLINE, LINDY, EQUIP and MICRO CONNECT.

How to choose a DVI or VGA cable

Connector type. DVI-D carries a digital signal only, DVI-A carries analogue only, and DVI-I can carry both. VGA (D-Sub) is an analogue connection. DVI-D cables make up the largest part of our range, with a good number of VGA cables too, so first check which ports your computer and display actually have.

Single or dual link. A standard single link DVI-D cable is enough up to 1920 × 1200. Higher-resolution displays, such as 2560 × 1440, need a DVI-D Dual Link cable. Our range includes these as well, so look for the marking before you buy.

Connector gender. Most cables have a plug at both ends, but there are also extension leads with a plug on one side and a socket on the other. An extension is useful when your existing cable does not reach the display and you would rather not replace it.

Length. Lengths of 1.8, 2, 3 and 5 m are common in our range, and there are 10 m cables too. Choose no longer than you need: a long cable weakens an analogue VGA signal, which can make the picture soft or give it ghosting. For longer runs, a thicker, well-shielded cable with ferrite cores is the better option.

Cable or converter. If one device has DVI and the other VGA, a cable alone may not be enough. A passive DVI-D to VGA adapter will not work, because DVI-D has no analogue signal. You need a DVI-I or DVI-A port, or an active converter.

Frequently asked questions about DVI and VGA cables

What is the difference between DVI-D, DVI-I and DVI-A?

DVI-D carries a digital picture only, DVI-A carries an analogue one only, and DVI-I can carry both. The connectors differ in their pin layout, so a DVI-D plug will not fit a DVI-A socket. If you are unsure, check which connector is named on the display or graphics card.

Can I connect DVI to VGA?

Yes, but only when the DVI port carries an analogue signal, meaning DVI-I or DVI-A. With a DVI-D port a passive cable or adapter will not work, because there is no analogue signal to pass on. In that case you need an active converter that turns the digital signal into an analogue one.

What cable length should I choose?

Choose the shortest cable that comfortably reaches your setup. Our range runs from 1 to 10 m, and 1.8, 2 or 3 m is usually enough for a desk. A VGA cable longer than a few metres can reduce picture quality, so for longer distances pick a well-shielded model.

Is DVI better than VGA?

In most cases yes, because DVI-D sends the picture digitally with no conversion, which gives a sharper image and cleaner text edges. VGA is analogue and more sensitive to cable length and interference. VGA still makes sense when older equipment has no other port.
