Mobile data terminals

Mobile data terminals

Data collection terminals are handheld computers with a built-in barcode scanner, made for warehouses, shops, logistics and production. Our range includes over 400 models, mostly from Honeywell and Zebra, along with Datalogic, CipherLab and Newland.

You will find terminals running Android or Windows, with a keypad or a touchscreen, from light retail devices to rugged industrial models.

How to choose a data collection terminal

Scanner type. A 1D laser scanner is enough if you only read standard linear barcodes. A 2D imager also reads QR and Data Matrix codes, codes on phone screens and poorly printed labels, which is why most new deployments use one.

Operating system. Most current terminals run Android, which is easy to connect to warehouse or point-of-sale software. Windows-based models are needed when a company relies on older specialist software written for Windows. Before buying, check how long the manufacturer promises security updates.

Durability. In a warehouse, cold store or outdoors a terminal gets dropped and splashed, so look at the IP rating and the stated drop height onto concrete. A shop or office can manage with a lighter casing, while an industrial model is larger and heavier.

Battery and connectivity. The battery should last a full shift, and a replaceable battery lets you keep working without charging breaks. Wi-Fi is needed to send data in real time, mobile data is essential for couriers and work outside the building, and Bluetooth connects a label printer or headset.

Keypad or screen. A numeric keypad is faster when you enter quantities often or work in gloves. A touchscreen is more comfortable when the application shows a lot of information, photos or captures signatures.

Frequently asked questions

What is a data collection terminal used for?

A data collection terminal is used wherever codes must be scanned quickly and the data recorded straight away: receiving and picking goods, stocktaking, deliveries or checking prices. It reads the code and passes the information to your stock system, so nobody has to write it down or re-enter it later.

Is an Android or Windows terminal better?

For a new deployment Android is usually the better choice, because it works easily with modern applications and receives updates. Windows only makes sense when you must keep using existing software built for Windows. Always check what your stock system supports.

Can a smartphone replace a data collection terminal?

A smartphone can be enough if you only scan a few codes now and then. If codes are scanned all shift, a terminal has clear advantages: a faster scanner, a tougher casing, dedicated scan buttons and a battery built for heavy use.

What do IP65 and IP67 mean on a terminal?

IP65 means protection against dust and jets of water, while IP67 also allows brief immersion in water. This helps in warehouses, outdoors or damp conditions. Drop resistance is stated separately, so check both ratings.
