How to choose a car charger or inverter
Supply voltage. Most cars run on 12 V, while lorries, buses and many motorhomes use a 24 V system. A lot of the chargers in our range accept 12 to 24 V, so one unit works in both. Even if you only own one car, check the stated input range before you buy.
Power and ports. Modern phones and tablets need a USB-C port with Power Delivery for fast charging, while older USB-A ports charge more slowly. If you charge several devices on a trip, choose a model with two or more ports and check how the power is shared when they are all in use.
Compatibility. Many chargers are universal and work with any device that charges over USB. Our range also includes models aimed specifically at smartphones or tablets, and a few with a Lightning connector for older iPhones. Chargers for laptops are less common, so check the required wattage first.
Charger or inverter. A charger converts the car's voltage to 5 V or another USB level, while an inverter produces 230 V mains power. Choose an inverter when you need to plug in a standard laptop power adapter or a small appliance. A cigarette lighter socket is usually fused at 10 or 15 A, so higher-power inverters should be connected directly to the battery.

Frequently asked questions
Can a car charger drain the battery?
Yes, if the socket stays powered when the engine is off. In many cars the cigarette lighter socket switches off with the ignition, but in some it stays live. If your socket is always on, unplug the charger when you leave the car for a longer time.
Is a 12 V charger suitable for a lorry?
Only if the charger states a 12 to 24 V input. Lorries and buses usually have a 24 V electrical system, and a charger rated for 12 V only may be damaged. Check the input voltage range in the product description before buying.
What charger power does a phone need?
Usually 18 to 30 W with USB-C Power Delivery is enough, though the exact figure depends on the phone. For fast charging, the phone and the charger must support the same fast-charging standard. A more powerful charger will not harm the phone, because the device limits the current it draws.
Can I charge a laptop in the car?
Yes, with a USB-C charger of sufficient power or a 230 V inverter. Many laptops need 45 to 100 W, so an ordinary phone charger will not be enough. Make sure the charger's output matches the wattage of your laptop's original adapter.
