How to choose a steam cleaner
Type of appliance. A steam mop is made for floors: you clean standing up, and the steam is fed straight into the mop pad. A cylinder steam cleaner has a separate body with a hose and attachments, which makes it better for grout lines, sinks, shower cubicles and windows. Our range includes both types, as well as portable models.
Power. Power in our range runs from 1100 to 2450 W, and 1500 W models are common. Higher power usually means faster heating and a steadier flow of steam, but the manufacturer's stated steam pressure and adjustment options matter too.
Water tank capacity. Tanks range from 0.25 to 1.8 litres. A 0.3 or 0.5 litre tank is enough for a single room or a kitchen, while 1.6 litres and above lets you clean for longer without refilling. A larger tank also makes the appliance heavier and slower to heat.
Attachments and surfaces. Check whether the box includes a floor pad, brushes, an extension tube or a hose, since these decide what you can actually clean. Hot steam may not suit laminate, parquet or unsealed wood, so check the manufacturer's guidance first.
Controls. In many models the amount of steam is set with buttons or a rotary dial. Adjustment is useful when the same appliance has to deal with both hard-wearing tiles and more delicate surfaces.

Frequently asked questions about steam cleaners
Can a steam cleaner be used on all floors?
No. Steam works well on tiles and porcelain stoneware, but laminate and parquet can swell or warp from moisture and heat. Check the recommendations from both the floor manufacturer and the steam cleaner manufacturer before you start.
Does a steam cleaner kill bacteria?
Hot steam can reduce the number of bacteria and dissolve grease without cleaning products. The result depends on steam temperature, contact time and the surface. It does not replace dedicated disinfectants where hygiene rules call for them.
How much power does a home steam cleaner need?

Do steam cleaners need distilled water?
