Irons and garment steamers

Irons and garment steamers

This category covers steam irons and garment steamers for everyday clothes care and for travel. Our range has over 30 models, mostly from Philips and Tefal, along with Sencor, Xiaomi and BaByliss.

An iron suits anyone who wants flat creases and crisp shirts, while a steamer is handy for freshening a garment on its hanger.

How to choose an iron or garment steamer

Iron or steamer. A steam iron presses the fabric flat, so it copes better with cotton and linen shirts and tablecloths. A steamer does not press: the steam relaxes the fibres, which makes it a good match for jackets, dresses, curtains and quick refreshing on a trip.

Steam output. Continuous steam is given in g/min, and in our range it runs from 20 to 55 g/min. Higher output softens thick fabric faster, and a steam boost, which in our range goes from 90 to 260 g/min, helps with stubborn creases.

Water tank. Tank capacity in our range runs from 0.1 to 0.35 L. A smaller tank needs refilling more often but makes the appliance lighter and easier to pack. If you work through a pile of clothes in one go, choose a larger one.

Heating time. Some models are ready in about 30 seconds, while others need up to 2 minutes. If you steam clothes in a rush in the morning, a short heat-up matters more than extra settings.

Steam control and cord. Adjustable steam lets you treat silk or synthetics gently and steam thick cotton harder, and many models in our range offer it. Cord length goes from 1.8 to 3 m, and a longer cord means less dependence on where the socket is.

Brands we carry

  • Philips: known for steam irons and garment steamers, and it makes up the largest share of our range.
  • Tefal: a French maker known for steam irons and steam generators with a separate water tank.
  • Xiaomi and Dreame: both are better known for smart home and cleaning devices, with Dreame especially associated with robot vacuums.
  • BaByliss: known first of all for hair styling tools, with clothes care as a side line.

Also in our range: Sencor, Tristar, Blaupunkt, MPM and Russell Hobbs.

Frequently asked questions

Can a garment steamer replace an iron?

Only partly. A steamer relaxes light fabrics, curtains and dress creases well, but it does not press the fabric, so it will not give sharp trouser creases or flatten thick shirts. If you wear formal clothes daily, a steam iron is the better main tool and a steamer is a useful addition.

How much steam output do I need for everyday ironing?

A moderate continuous steam output is often enough for everyday shirts. In our range it runs from 20 to 55 g/min. For thick fabrics and frequent use, choose higher output and a steam boost function.

What water should I use in an iron or steamer?

Follow the instructions for your specific model, as requirements differ. Some appliances work with tap water, while in hard water areas distilled water or a mix with tap water is often recommended. Limescale can block the steam holes and weaken the steam.

How quickly does a garment steamer heat up?

Some models in our range are ready in about 30 seconds, while others take around 2 minutes. Check the stated heat-up time before buying, especially if you will usually be steaming in a hurry.
