Microwaves and mini ovens

Microwaves and mini ovens

Microwave ovens for home kitchens: solo models that heat and defrost, grill microwaves and combination models that also bake, as countertop, built-in and over-the-range units. The range suits anyone replacing an old microwave or fitting out a new kitchen. Brands include BOSCH, MIDEA, G3 FERRARI, CASO, LG and SHARP, with over 130 models in total.

How to choose a microwave oven

Type. A solo microwave reheats, cooks and defrosts, and it is the largest group in our range. A grill microwave adds an element for browning, and a combination model adds hot-air convection so it can also bake. Pick a combination model only if it should stand in for a small oven.

Placement. Countertop models need only a socket and free space around the case for ventilation. Built-in models go into a kitchen unit and need a niche of the right size, so check the dimensions first. Over-the-range models are mounted above a hob.

Capacity. 20 L is the most common size in our range and is enough for one or two people reheating plates and ready meals. Models of 23 to 28 L take wider dishes and family portions more comfortably, and some go up to 39 L.

Power. Most microwave outputs in our range fall between 700 and 1000 W, with 800 W the most frequent. 700 W is adequate for reheating and defrosting, while a higher output shortens cooking time. Grill power is listed separately and is not the same figure.

Brands we carry

  • BOSCH and SIEMENS: sister brands within the same appliance group, both known for built-in kitchen appliances designed for standard kitchen units.
  • LG: known for inverter technology in microwaves, which adjusts power smoothly instead of switching it on and off.
  • SHARP: one of the longest-established microwave oven makers, with a long history in countertop models.
  • SAMSUNG: many of its microwaves have a ceramic enamel interior, which is easy to wipe clean.
  • MIDEA: a Chinese home appliance maker and one of the largest in the world.
  • CATA: a Spanish maker known for built-in kitchen appliances and cooker hoods.
  • G3 FERRARI: an Italian brand of small kitchen appliances.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a solo, grill and combination microwave?

A solo microwave heats with microwaves only, a grill microwave adds a grill element for browning, and a combination microwave also has hot-air convection for baking. Solo models are the simplest and suit reheating and defrosting. Choose a combination model if you want to bake as well.

What size of microwave do I need?

For one or two people, 20 L is usually enough, and it is the most common size in our range. Families who reheat large plates or cook whole dishes may prefer 25 L or more. Check that the turntable fits your largest plate.

How many watts should a microwave have?

800 W is enough for most household use and is the most frequent output in our range. At 700 W food simply takes a little longer, and at 900 to 1000 W it heats faster. Recipes and packaging often give times for a specific wattage, so you may need to adjust them.

Can a built-in microwave be used on a worktop?

Generally no. A built-in microwave is designed to be fitted in a cabinet niche with specified ventilation gaps, while a countertop model needs free space around the case. Always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.
