Type of appliance. A bread maker, an ice cream maker and a yogurt maker work in different ways, and this category lists them together, so decide first what you want to make. A bread maker kneads, proves and bakes the dough by itself, while a yogurt maker simply holds a steady, gentle warmth.
Capacity. For bread makers, loaf size matters and manufacturers state it by weight: a smaller loaf is enough for one or two people, while a family will want a larger one. For ice cream and yogurt makers, look at the bowl or jar volume and how many portions you want in one batch.
Programmes and how it works. In a bread maker, programmes for dough, gluten-free bread and jam are useful, as is a timer that lets you wake up to fresh bread. Ice cream makers come either with a bowl that must be frozen beforehand or with a built-in compressor that lets you make batches back to back. A timer on a yogurt maker lets you control the fermentation time yourself.

Is a bread maker worth buying?
A bread maker is worth considering if you eat bread daily and want to choose the flour and other ingredients yourself. Once you have added the ingredients and picked a programme, the machine does the rest and you only take out the loaf. Keep in mind that it takes up counter space and the loaf shape depends on the model.
What is the difference between an ice cream maker with a compressor and one with a freezable bowl?
A machine with a compressor chills the mixture itself, so you can make ice cream straight away and several batches in a row. With a freezable bowl, the bowl must spend several hours in the freezer beforehand and needs refreezing after each batch. Compressor models are usually larger and heavier.
Does a yogurt maker use a lot of electricity?
Most yogurt makers use very little electricity, because they only hold a temperature of around 40 °C for several hours. The lowest-power appliances in our range are rated at just 12 W. Always check the power in the specific model's description.
Can a bread maker make anything other than bread?
