Professional video equipment

Professional video equipment

Professional video equipment for studios, live production, events and surveillance systems: this category covers signal converters, capture and recording devices, monitors and video surveillance products. The brands are AJA, PORTKEYS and ERNITEC. It suits broadcasters, video engineers, production crews and system integrators. Our range includes over 20 products.

How to choose professional video equipment

Connections and signal standard. Check the inputs and outputs first. Professional sources usually use SDI (BNC connectors), while event cameras and displays often have only HDMI, so a converter between the two is a common need. The SDI version must match your signal: 3G-SDI is enough for Full HD up to 60 frames per second, while 4K at higher frame rates generally needs 12G-SDI.

Resolution and formats. Look at the highest resolution and frame rate the device handles, and whether it supports the format you shoot, such as HD, UHD or 4K, progressive or interlaced. HDR support and colour depth matter for grading and finishing work, but a simple monitoring chain often does not need them.

Computer connection and power. Capture devices connect through Thunderbolt, USB or PCIe, so check which free ports your computer has before buying. Small converters are usually powered by an external adapter. For location work, find out whether the device can run from a battery or needs mains power.

Software and workflow. Make sure drivers exist for your operating system and that your editing, streaming or recording application supports the device. When choosing a monitor, look at the on-set aids it offers, such as focus and exposure assistance. Surveillance equipment has to work with the system you already run.

Brands in this category

  • AJA: an American manufacturer known for video converters, capture and I/O devices and recorders used by broadcasters and post-production studios. It accounts for most of the products in our range.
  • PORTKEYS: known for on-camera monitors popular with independent filmmakers and small shooting crews.
  • ERNITEC: a Danish company that specialises in video surveillance systems and the equipment used for site security and monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

What does a video signal converter do?

A video signal converter turns a signal from one format or connection type into another, for example SDI to HDMI or the reverse. This lets a camera, monitor, vision mixer and recorder work together even when their connectors differ. Some converters also change the resolution or frame rate.

What is the difference between SDI and HDMI?

SDI is a professional standard with locking BNC connectors, while HDMI is mainly found on consumer equipment. SDI cables can run much longer than HDMI cables and the connector does not pull out by accident, which is why studios and events favour it. HDMI is usually fine for short connections.

How do I record a camera signal on a computer?

You need a capture device that accepts the camera output (SDI or HDMI) and connects to the computer via Thunderbolt, USB or PCIe. The picture can then be recorded or streamed in compatible software. Check the highest supported resolution and frame rate before buying.

Do I need a separate monitor for my camera?

Often yes, because a camera's own screen is small and offers few aids. An external monitor shows a larger picture and makes it easier to judge focus and exposure. For simple streaming or video calls you usually do not need one.
