Lenses and lens accessories

This category covers camera lenses and lens accessories: filters, caps, cleaning supplies and other small add-ons. It suits anyone who wants to extend a camera kit or protect the optics they already own.

Our range has over 120 products, including Hama, Sony, Canon and Walimex.

How to choose a lens and lens accessories

Mount type. A lens must match the mount of your camera, such as Sony E, Canon RF or Canon EF. Some lenses from other systems can be fitted with an adapter, but autofocus or image stabilisation may then be limited. Check the mount name of your camera model before buying.

Focal length. Wide-angle lenses (around 35 mm and shorter) suit landscapes, architecture and interiors. A 50 mm lens shows a scene much as the human eye sees it, while long telephoto lenses are needed for sport, wildlife and distant subjects. A zoom lets you change framing without swapping lenses, whereas prime lenses are usually faster.

Aperture. The lower the f-number, for example f/1.8, the more light reaches the sensor. Such a lens helps in dim rooms and gives a softly blurred background in portraits. Faster lenses are usually larger and more expensive.

Sensor format. Lenses designed for full-frame cameras also work on APS-C bodies, but the field of view becomes narrower. APS-C lenses on a full-frame camera often crop the image or do not fit at all.

Filter thread size. The size of filters, protective caps and lens hoods is given in millimetres. You will find the diameter on the front ring of the lens, next to the ø symbol. Buy accessories by this number, not by focal length or lens model.

Frequently asked questions about lenses

Will a lens from one system fit another camera?

Usually not, because each system uses its own mount. An adapter can help in some cases, but it may limit autofocus or aperture control. The safest choice is a lens made for the mount on your camera.

Which lens should a beginner choose?

A versatile zoom covering wide-angle to short telephoto suits most beginners. As a second lens, a fast prime such as a 50 mm f/1.8 is a good addition for portraits and darker rooms.

What are lens filters for?

A filter either protects the front element or changes the image. A protective filter guards the glass against scratches and dust, a polarising filter reduces reflections and deepens skies, and an ND filter cuts the amount of light so you can use longer exposures in daylight.

How do I clean a camera lens?

First remove loose dust with a blower or soft brush so it does not scratch the glass. Then wipe gently with a microfibre cloth, dampened with lens cleaning fluid if needed. Do not touch the glass with your fingers or use household cleaners.
