Camera flashes

Camera flashes for photographers who need more light than a built-in flash gives: this category covers on-camera flashguns and studio flashes. Our range has over 90 models, mostly from GODOX and NEEWER, along with SONY, WALIMEX and other makers.

They are used for portraits, events, product photography and indoor shots.

How to choose a camera flash

Type. An on-camera flash fits in a camera bag, so it suits events, weddings and reportage. A studio flash delivers more light and is usually mounted on a stand for work in one place.

Compatibility. Check that the flash foot fits your camera: some makers, such as Sony, use their own shoe design. Automatic TTL metering only works with a flash built for your camera system, and GODOX and NEEWER often offer separate versions for different camera brands.

Power. Flash power is given as a guide number (GN): the higher it is, the further the light reaches, or the lower the ISO you can use. A small room with the light bounced off the ceiling needs only medium power, while a large space or bright daylight calls for more.

Wireless control. Radio-controlled flashes keep working when there is no line of sight between the transmitter and the flash, which suits setups with several lights. Optical triggering is simpler but more sensitive to bright ambient light and obstacles.

Power source and head movement. Flashes that take AA cells are easy to keep supplied with spares, while a lithium battery often gives faster recycling times and more flashes per charge. A head that tilts and swivels lets you bounce light off a ceiling or wall for softer shadows.

Brands we carry

  • GODOX: known for on-camera and studio flashes built around its own 2.4 GHz X wireless system, which lets one transmitter control several flashes. It is the largest brand in our range.
  • NEEWER: offers on-camera and studio flashes as well as other photographic lighting, popular with hobbyists and newer photographers.
  • SONY, CANON, OLYMPUS: camera makers whose flashes are designed for their own camera systems, so TTL and other automatic functions work without extra setup.

Also in our range: WALIMEX, HAMA, KODAK, GROTHE.

Frequently asked questions about camera flashes

Will a GODOX flash work with a Sony camera?

Yes, as long as you choose the version made for the Sony shoe. GODOX often makes the same flash model for several camera brands, and TTL and other automatic functions only work with the correct version. Check compatibility in the product description.

What is the difference between TTL and manual flash mode?

In TTL mode the camera sets the flash power for the scene, while in manual mode you choose it yourself. TTL is convenient when conditions change quickly, for example at events. Manual mode gives the same light in every frame, which is why many people use it in the studio.

Is an external flash better than the built-in one?

Usually yes, because an external flash is more powerful and its head can be turned towards a ceiling or wall. Bounced light produces softer shadows than the direct burst of a built-in flash.

Should I buy an on-camera or a studio flash?

Choose an on-camera flash if you shoot events, travel or often change location. A studio flash suits a fixed workspace, such as portrait or product photography, where you want more power.
