Video recorders store footage from CCTV cameras. This category covers network video recorders (NVRs) and related surveillance units for homes, shops and small businesses. Our range includes over 25 models, among them UNIVIEW, Dahua Technology, Hanwha Vision and Hikvision.
How to choose a video recorder
Recorder type. An NVR works with IP cameras, which compress the picture themselves and send it over the network, while analogue cameras need a DVR. Find out which cameras you already have or plan to buy first, because the two systems cannot be mixed. For a new installation, most people choose IP.
Number of channels. The channel count sets how many cameras you can connect. Our range includes models with 4 and 8 video input channels. It is worth leaving a couple of channels free, since replacing the whole recorder later is more hassle than buying a larger one at the start.
Storage capacity. The maximum supported capacity in our range is 10 TB or 16 TB. Recording time depends on the number of cameras, resolution, frame rate and compression: H.265 takes up less space than H.264. Recorders are often sold without a hard drive, so check what is included and choose a drive designed for continuous surveillance recording.
Network connection and PoE. Some models have a single Ethernet (RJ-45) port running at 10/100 Mbit/s. That is enough for a few cameras, but with high-resolution cameras a faster connection is a better idea. Recorders with built-in PoE power the cameras over the same cable, so you do not need separate power supplies.
Operating conditions. Manufacturers state a permitted relative humidity, which in our range is 10 to 90% or 10 to 93%. Keep the recorder somewhere dry and ventilated rather than in a damp cellar or garage.
Video recorder brands we carry
- UNIVIEW: a manufacturer focused on IP video surveillance, offering cameras and NVRs within one system.
- Dahua Technology and Hikvision: both are among the largest video surveillance manufacturers in the world, and their recorders often work best with cameras from the same brand.
- Hanwha Vision: a South Korean manufacturer, formerly Hanwha Techwin, known for professional surveillance cameras.
- UBIQUITI: its recorders run UniFi Protect software, so video surveillance can be managed alongside UniFi network equipment.
- Axis Communications: a Swedish company that introduced the first network camera in 1996.
Also in our range: Foscam.
Frequently asked questions about video recorders
What is the difference between an NVR and a DVR?
An NVR is designed for IP cameras, which compress the video themselves and send it over the network. A DVR connects to analogue cameras and processes the picture itself. Which one you need depends on the cameras you have or plan to buy.
How many channels do I need?
You need at least as many channels as cameras you will connect. Our range includes 4-channel and 8-channel models. If you expect to add cameras later, choose a recorder with spare channels.
How much storage does a video recorder need?
It depends on the number of cameras, the picture quality and how long you want to keep recordings. More cameras and higher resolution need more space, while H.265 compression saves some. Before buying, check the maximum capacity the recorder supports, which in our range is 10 TB or 16 TB.
Can I watch the footage on my phone?
Most modern network recorders let you view live and recorded video on a phone through the manufacturer's app. The recorder must be connected to the internet, and sometimes extra network settings are needed. Check that the model you choose supports the app before buying.
