The smart speakers category covers voice-controlled speakers for music, radio, timers and controlling devices around the home. Our range includes models from Amazon and Apple, with most of them made by Amazon.
They suit anyone who wants wireless music, quick answers by voice, or one place to control lighting and other smart home devices.
How to choose a smart speaker
Voice assistant. Amazon speakers run Alexa, while the Apple HomePod is controlled with Siri. Choose according to the phone and home devices you already own: iPhone users get more from a HomePod and AirPlay, whereas Alexa works with devices from many different manufacturers. Check which languages the assistant understands before buying, as not every feature is available in every language.
Sound quality and size. A small speaker suits a desk, kitchen or bedroom, while a larger one fills a living room and produces deeper bass. If music matters to you, look for models that can be paired as a stereo set or used in a multi-room system.
Smart home control. If you plan to control bulbs, plugs or thermostats, check whether the speaker supports Matter, Zigbee or Thread. Some models can act as a smart home hub, which saves you buying a separate device.
Connectivity and privacy. Smart speakers connect over Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth is often available for playing music from a phone. If you are concerned about the microphones, choose a model with a physical mute button.

Smart speaker FAQ
Does a smart speaker need an internet connection?
Yes, most features only work with a Wi-Fi connection. Without it you cannot ask the assistant questions, stream from music services or control smart home devices. Some models can still be used as a basic Bluetooth speaker.
What is the difference between Amazon Echo and Apple HomePod?
The main difference is the ecosystem. Echo uses Alexa and works with devices from many manufacturers, while the HomePod uses Siri and works best alongside an iPhone and other Apple products. It makes sense to choose based on the devices you already have at home.
Is a smart speaker listening all the time?
The microphones are always waiting for the wake word, but audio is normally only sent to the cloud after it is heard. Many models have a mute button that switches the microphones off. It is worth reviewing the privacy settings when you first set the speaker up.
Can I control lights and other devices with a smart speaker?
Yes, as long as the devices work with the speaker's assistant. Before buying, check that your bulbs or plugs support Alexa or Apple Home, and look for the Matter standard on newer devices. You can then control the whole setup by voice.
