DVD and Blu-ray players are for anyone who wants to watch films from discs and connect a player easily to a television or home cinema system. Our range has over 25 models, both DVD players and Blu-ray players, mostly from Panasonic, along with Denver, Sony, Lenco and Soundmaster.
How to choose a DVD or Blu-ray player
Disc format. A DVD player plays DVDs and usually CDs, while a Blu-ray player also plays Blu-ray discs in Full HD. Blu-ray players normally play DVDs as well, so they suit anyone with an older collection who is buying new films. If you only watch DVDs, a basic DVD player is enough. Only dedicated models play 4K UHD discs, so check the description for that.
Connections. A modern television needs an HDMI connection, because it carries both picture and sound. Our range includes players with one or two HDMI outputs. A second output is useful when you want to send the picture to the television and the sound separately to an audio system. If you have a home cinema receiver, check whether the player has an optical or coaxial digital audio output.
Network and streaming. Some players in our range have an Ethernet LAN port, which allows them to run streaming apps and receive firmware updates. Basic DVD players usually lack these features. If you only watch discs, a network connection is not essential.
File support and region code. A USB port lets you play video, music and photo files from a memory stick, but supported formats vary, so read the specification. Also look at the disc region code: DVDs sold in Europe are normally region 2, and Blu-ray discs region B.
Standby power consumption. A player spends most of its life plugged in, so standby power is worth a glance. Values listed in our range run from 0.25 to 0.5 W.
Brands we carry
- Panasonic: known for Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray players, and the largest group in our range.
- Sony: one of the developers of the Blu-ray format, so Blu-ray players are a core part of its product line.
- Denver: a Danish consumer electronics maker offering simple, easy-to-use devices.
- Lenco and Soundmaster: both known for audio equipment such as radios, turntables and CD players, so their players often complement a music setup.
Also in our range: Reflexion, Manta, Sencor and Xoro.
Frequently asked questions
Does a Blu-ray player play DVDs?
Yes, most Blu-ray players play both DVDs and CDs. Always check the list of supported discs in the specification, especially if you use recordable discs.
Can a DVD player play Blu-ray discs?
No, a DVD player cannot read Blu-ray discs. Blu-ray uses a different laser to read the disc, so you need a Blu-ray player for that content.
Does a disc player need an internet connection?
Not for playing discs. A connection only matters if you want to use streaming apps or update the player's firmware, and that requires a model with an Ethernet LAN port or Wi-Fi.
How do I connect a player to my television?
In most cases an HDMI cable is all you need: one end goes into the player's HDMI output, the other into an HDMI input on the television. An older television can be connected through SCART or composite if the player has that connection.
