How to choose DJ and music production equipment
Purpose. Decide first what you will be doing: mixing tracks, writing music or recording vocals. A DJ controller is made for mixing, a MIDI keyboard, sampler or synthesiser for building melodies, and a microphone for voice and podcasts. One device rarely replaces a whole setup.
Software and connection. Most DJ controllers and MIDI keyboards connect to a computer over USB and work with DJ or music production software. Check that the model supports your operating system and whether software is included in the box. Only some samplers and synthesisers work without a computer.
Connectors and headphones. In our range, headphone connections come as 3.5 mm, 6.3 mm or both sizes (3.5 mm/6.35 mm). A 3.5 mm jack is convenient at home, while studio headphones usually have a 6.3 mm plug, so you may need an adapter. Also look for speaker outputs and a microphone input.

Does a beginner DJ need a computer?
In most cases, yes. Most DJ controllers work with DJ software running on a computer, and the controller itself only operates that software. Standalone DJ players and mixers need no computer, but they are mainly used in clubs.
What is the difference between a MIDI keyboard and a synthesiser?
A MIDI keyboard makes no sound by itself. It sends notes and control commands to a computer or sound module. A synthesiser has its own sound engine and can play on its own through speakers or headphones.
What microphone do I need for a podcast?
A USB microphone is the simplest option, because it plugs straight into a computer. An XLR microphone also needs an audio interface or mixer, but it makes it easier to expand and upgrade your setup piece by piece.
