This category covers TV soundbars with subwoofers, home cinema systems, amplifiers and home cinema receivers. It suits anyone who wants fuller sound for films and music than built-in TV speakers can give. Our range includes LG, SHARP, SONY and PIONEER.
How to choose a soundbar or home cinema receiver
Type of device. A soundbar replaces the TV speakers with a single unit, so it suits a simple setup with few cables. A receiver with separate speakers takes up more room, but lets you replace or add individual components later.
Number of channels. Formats 2.0 and 2.1 are stereo, with 2.1 adding a subwoofer. Systems such as 3.1.2, 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 add a centre channel, and the last digit shows the upward-firing speakers used for Dolby Atmos style sound. Our range includes 2.0, 2.1, 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 5.1.2 and 5.1.3 configurations.
RMS power. RMS shows continuous output rather than a short-lived peak, so it is the fairer figure for comparing models. Our range includes systems with a rated RMS power from 182 to 400 W, and subwoofers with an RMS power from 20 to 220 W. A small room needs less power, while a large living room is better served by a stronger system with a separate subwoofer.
Connection to the TV. Check that your TV has an HDMI ARC or eARC socket, as this carries the sound over a single cable. CEC lets you control the volume with the TV remote: LG calls it SimpLink and Sony calls it BRAVIA Sync. Our range includes models with this feature.
Brands we carry
- LG: makes soundbars alongside its televisions, and they can be controlled with an LG TV remote through SimpLink.
- SONY: soundbars and receivers work with BRAVIA Sync, so a Sony TV remote can also control the sound.
- PIONEER: an audio specialist known for home cinema receivers and amplifiers.
- SHARP and HISENSE: both are better known for televisions, so their soundbars are generally designed to connect to a TV and improve its sound.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a soundbar and a home cinema receiver?
A soundbar is a single long unit with built-in speakers that sits below the TV, while a receiver is a separate amplifier that you connect speakers to. A soundbar is quicker to set up and takes less space. A receiver offers more connections and lets you change the speakers.
What does 5.1.2 mean?
The label 5.1.2 means five main sound channels, one subwoofer channel and two upward-firing channels. The first number covers front and surround speakers, the second the subwoofer, and the third the sound effects from above. This format is needed for Dolby Atmos style surround sound.
Will a soundbar work with a TV from another brand?
Yes, most soundbars work with a TV from any brand through HDMI ARC, an optical connection or Bluetooth. Some extra features, such as control with the TV remote, work best with a TV from the same manufacturer. Check your TV's sockets before buying.
How much power does a soundbar need for a living room?
It depends on the size of the room and how you listen. A small room is fine with moderate RMS power, while a large living room is better with a stronger system and a separate subwoofer. Compare RMS power rather than peak power.
