How to choose an industrial power supply
Output voltage. Start by finding out what DC voltage your equipment needs. Industrial systems often use 12 V, 24 V or 48 V, and 24 V is the usual standard for automation controllers and sensors. If your equipment tolerates small deviations, an adjustable output voltage can be useful.
Power and headroom. Add up the current of every connected device and allow 20 to 30 per cent spare capacity. A supply that does not run at full load stays cooler and lasts longer. Also consider start-up currents, as motors and relays briefly draw considerably more than their normal rating.
Input voltage. Most cabinets need only a single-phase 230 V AC input. If the site has a three-phase supply or DC feed, choose a model that clearly states support for it.
Mounting. Cabinet power supplies are most often clipped onto a DIN rail, while enclosed chassis models are screwed to a plate or wall. Measure the width and depth of the unit so that there is still room around it for cooling.
Operating conditions and protection. Check the permitted operating temperature and the protection against short circuit, overload and overvoltage. In a hot cabinet the maximum output can drop, so look at the derating curve in the manufacturer's datasheet.

Frequently asked questions
How does an industrial power supply differ from an ordinary adapter?
An industrial power supply is built for continuous operation inside a cabinet or enclosure. It offers a regulated output, built-in protections and mounting on a DIN rail or plate. An ordinary adapter is usually meant for a single consumer device and lacks these features.
How do I work out what power rating I need?
Add up the current drawn by all devices at their operating voltage, multiply it by that voltage, and increase the result by roughly a quarter. For a 24 V system drawing 5 A, a supply of at least 150 W is a sensible choice. The spare capacity guards against overload and extends service life.
What is a DIN rail power supply?
It is a power supply with a clip that snaps onto a standard 35 mm DIN rail in an electrical or automation cabinet. Mounting is quick, and a unit can be replaced without tools. Terminals are normally on the front, so wiring is easy to reach.
Can I connect several power supplies in parallel?
Yes, but only if the manufacturer allows it for that specific model. Parallel connection is used to increase capacity or to build in redundancy, and redundancy often needs a separate redundancy module. Without the manufacturer's approval the load may be shared unevenly, so do not connect supplies in parallel on your own.
