Server and OEM power supplies

Server and OEM power supplies

Server and OEM power supplies are made for servers, workstations, network equipment and branded desktop PCs. Our range has over 90 models, mostly from DELL, HP Inc., Inter-Tech and Lenovo, from hot-swap modules to internal units for cases fitted in a server rack.

How to choose a server or OEM power supply

Compatibility. Match the manufacturer's part number on the label of the old unit, not just the wattage. Modules for DELL, HP, Lenovo or Fujitsu servers often look similar but differ in connector layout and control signalling, so a unit from another model may not fit or start.

Power rating. Choose a unit rated at least as high as the original. If you plan to add drives, memory or expansion cards, leave some headroom and work out the load of the whole system, not just the processor.

Format and redundancy. Hot-swap modules slide into a bay at the back of the server, and a second unit keeps the machine running while you replace the first. Internal formats such as 1U or Flex ATX are screwed into the case. Check which one your chassis uses.

Efficiency rating. An 80 Plus Platinum or Titanium unit turns less energy into heat, which counts in a rack that runs around the clock. For a small office server, 80 Plus Bronze or Gold is often enough.

Input type and airflow. Most units connect to AC mains, but some network equipment, particularly from Cisco and Juniper, uses DC modules. Confirm the current type and, where marked, the airflow direction so the module matches the cooling of the device.

Brands in our range

  • DELL: the largest group in our range, mainly modules for PowerEdge servers and Precision workstations.
  • HP Inc. and HP Enterprise: HP Enterprise builds ProLiant servers, while HP Inc. covers desktops and Z-series workstations, so the units suit different kinds of equipment.
  • Lenovo: known for ThinkSystem servers and ThinkStation workstations, which these replacement units are made for.
  • Inter-Tech: a German company known for PC cases and standard-format power supplies, including units for rack cases.
  • Cisco and Juniper: network equipment makers whose switch and router power modules are often hot-swappable.
  • Fujitsu Technology Solutions: known for PRIMERGY servers, which need modules from the matching series.

Also in our range: FANTEC, ZTE Server & Storage, Fortron Source and Schroff.

Frequently asked questions about server power supplies

How does a server power supply differ from a normal PC power supply?

A server power supply is built for continuous operation in a rack, often as a fixed-shape module that plugs straight into the server's backplane. A standard ATX unit has loose cables and a different body, so it will not fit most branded servers. Many servers use two modules so that one can fail without stopping the machine.

What does an OEM power supply mean?

An OEM power supply is made for a computer or server manufacturer such as DELL, HP or Lenovo and fitted in their systems. It is often sold as a spare part and carries the manufacturer's part number rather than a retail brand name. Always compare that number with the one on your device.

Can I replace a server power supply while the server is running?

Only if the server has redundant hot-swap modules and the second unit is working. In that case you can pull out the faulty module and insert the new one without shutting down, but read the manufacturer's guide first. A server without redundancy must be switched off.

How do I find the right replacement for a DELL or HP server?

Read the part number on the label of the installed unit and match it against the product listing, together with the wattage and format. If the label is unreadable, look for the list of compatible modules in the documentation for your server model. Different generations of the same server line can use different modules.
