Server fans and heatsinks

Server fans and heatsinks

This category contains server CPU heatsinks, chassis fans and cooling modules, aimed at administrators and IT teams who need to replace a worn or noisy part. Our range has over 100 models, mostly from HPE, Lenovo and Supermicro, plus Arctic and Inter-Tech.

How to choose a server fan or heatsink

Compatibility with your server model. Server cooling parts are usually made for specific series, so start with the server model and the manufacturer's part number. Parts marked HPE, Lenovo or Supermicro are generally intended for those manufacturers' own hardware.

CPU socket and height. The heatsink must match the processor socket and the chassis height: 1U servers take only low-profile heatsinks, while 2U and taller chassis can fit larger ones. Some servers use different heatsinks for the first and second processor, so check that too.

Airflow and pressure. Server fans spin faster than ordinary PC fans and must push air through densely packed components, so speed and static pressure matter more than low noise. If you choose a quieter fan, make sure it still cools adequately under load.

Connector and hot-swap design. Some server fans come in a module that can be replaced without shutting the server down, while others plug into a 4-pin PWM header on the board. Check the connector type so the server can control the speed and does not raise fault warnings.

Standard or branded parts. A home-built server, NAS or 19-inch case will often accept standard-size fans (40, 60, 80 or 120 mm). In a branded server it is better to choose the original module, because its connector and control are matched to the board.

Brands we carry

  • HPE (Hewlett Packard Enterprise): known for ProLiant servers, so parts with this name are generally meant for cooling those machines.
  • Lenovo and IBM: Lenovo took over IBM's x86 server business in 2014, so IBM-marked parts usually suit older System x servers and Lenovo parts the newer ones.
  • Supermicro: makes server motherboards and chassis, so its fans and heatsinks are designed around the airflow of those chassis.
  • Arctic: known for PC fans and coolers with PWM control, which can also be used in self-built systems.
  • Inter-Tech: makes PC and 19-inch rack cases, so its fans often suit cooling in that kind of chassis.
  • be quiet!: a German brand known for quiet CPU coolers and fans.

Also in our range: Fujitsu, Xilence, Cisco and Graugear.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a server fan with a normal PC fan?

Sometimes, but only if the size, connector and airflow match. Many server fans spin faster and build more pressure than ordinary ones, and the server may show a fault warning if it does not detect the speed signal.

Does a server CPU heatsink need its own fan?

Not always. Many server heatsinks are passive and rely on the chassis fans to push air through them, so without proper airflow and the air shroud they will not cool enough.

How do I know which heatsink fits my server?

The most accurate way is to compare the manufacturer's part number with the marking on the old part or the server documentation. Then check the processor socket and the server height, for example 1U or 2U.

Do I need new thermal paste when replacing a heatsink?

Yes, once the heatsink is removed, clean off the old paste and apply fresh paste, unless the heatsink already comes with paste applied. Tighten the screws in a crossing pattern, following the server manufacturer's sequence.
