Video cables

Video cables connect monitors, TVs and projectors to computers, laptops and games consoles. Our range has over 1,200 cables, including HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI and VGA types. The leading brands are Delock, ACT, Transmedia and InLine.

How to choose a video cable

Connector type. Start by checking which video ports your computer and screen have. Most current monitors offer HDMI and DisplayPort, while older models and projectors still use DVI or VGA. If the ports differ, you need a cable with different ends or an adapter.

Connector gender. A standard connection needs a cable with a male plug at both ends. In our range most cables have a male connector at one end, while the other end is either male or female. A female end is what you need for extension cables and short adapters.

Resolution and refresh rate. 4K at 60 Hz needs at least HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort 1.2. Gaming monitors with higher refresh rates and 8K screens usually call for HDMI 2.1 or DisplayPort 1.4 and newer cables. VGA is an analogue connection, so the picture will be softer than over digital ports.

Length. The longer the cable, the more the signal weakens, especially with high-resolution video. One to two metres is usually enough at a desk, and for longer runs it is worth choosing an active or optical cable.

Colour. Most cables are black, but there are also white, grey, beige and ivory ones. That helps when the cable is visible against a light desk or wall, or when it needs to match older equipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HDMI and DisplayPort cables?

HDMI is mostly found on TVs, consoles and many monitors, while DisplayPort is more common on computer monitors and graphics cards. DisplayPort is handy for connecting several monitors and for screens with high refresh rates. Choose according to the ports on both devices and the standard they support.

Does a video cable carry sound as well?

HDMI and DisplayPort cables carry audio together with video, provided the screen has speakers or an audio output. VGA and DVI do not carry sound, so you need a separate audio cable.

What length of video cable should I choose?

Choose a length that leaves the cable slack: at a desk, one to two metres is usually enough. Measure with a little spare, because a cable bent too sharply wears out the connectors faster. For runs of several metres, especially with 4K video, an active or optical cable is the safer option.

Do I need a special cable for 4K?

Yes, the cable has to match the bandwidth required. For 4K at 60 Hz an HDMI High Speed cable (HDMI 2.0) is normally enough, while HDMI 2.1 features need an Ultra High Speed cable. An old HDMI 1.4 cable may only show 4K at 30 Hz.
