Power strips with USB

This category contains USB extension cables that lengthen the reach of a USB port, so a keyboard, mouse, printer, webcam or external drive can be connected when the computer's port is somewhere awkward. Our range includes more than 10 models from ROLINE, TRANSMEDIA, BELKIN and SYGONIX.

How to choose a USB extension cable

USB standard. An extension cable can only run as fast as the slowest part of the chain. A USB 2.0 extension is enough for a keyboard, mouse or printer, but for an external drive or a webcam it usually makes sense to choose USB 3.0 (also called USB 3.2 Gen 1) or faster.

Length. Passive USB 2.0 cables generally work up to 5 m, while passive USB 3.x cables have a shorter safe length, often around 2 or 3 m. Buy only as much as you need, because every extra metre raises the risk of signal loss.

Active or passive. An active extension cable contains a signal booster, so it can cover a longer distance and keep its speed. A passive one is simpler and suits short runs, such as from the edge of a desk to the computer case.

Connector type. A standard extension has a Type-A plug on one end and a Type-A socket on the other. If your computer or device has a USB-C port, you need a USB-C extension rather than an ordinary Type-A cable.

Shielding and power. A shielded cable with ferrite cores is less sensitive to interference near power cables or power supplies. If you connect a device that draws more current, choose thicker conductors, because voltage drops more over a long cable.

Brands in our range

  • ROLINE: a European supplier of computer cables and adapters, with USB, video and network cables in its portfolio.
  • TRANSMEDIA: makes audio, video and computer connection cables and accessories, so its extensions suit both office and home equipment.

Also in our range: an extension cable from SYGONIX.

Frequently asked questions about USB extension cables

How long can a USB extension cable be?

A passive USB 2.0 extension cable generally works up to 5 m, while a passive USB 3.x cable is often limited to around 2 or 3 m. For longer distances you need an active extension cable with a signal booster. Chaining several extensions together is best avoided, as it increases the chance of faults and dropped connections.

Does a USB extension cable slow a device down?

A good extension cable that matches the USB standard of your device does not reduce speed. Problems appear when a USB 2.0 extension is used with a fast device, or when the cable is too long and has no active boosting. In that case the speed drops or the device is not detected at all.

Can I connect an external drive or SSD through an extension cable?

Yes, but you need a USB 3.0 or faster extension and a reasonably short cable. With a USB 2.0 extension the drive will work, but data transfers will be much slower. For drives without their own power supply, cable quality matters too, because voltage falls over a long cable.

What is the difference between a USB extension cable and a USB hub?

A USB extension cable only lengthens one connection, while a hub turns one port into several. Choose an extension when you need to reach a more distant spot, and a hub when you run out of free ports. A hub should not be used as a substitute for an extension cable, as it is not designed to cover longer distances.
