SATA data cables connect hard drives, SSDs and optical drives to a motherboard or SATA controller. The category holds over 400 models for PC builds, repairs and upgrades. DELOCK, LENOVO and INLINE supply the most of them, and there are also cables from WENTRONIC, SHARKOON and STARTECH.
How to choose a SATA data cable
Length. The cable should reach the drive without strain, but without a large surplus that gets in the way of airflow inside the case. Our range includes cables of 0.15 m, 0.3 m, 0.5 m, 0.75 m and 1 m. In a typical mid-sized case 0.3 or 0.5 m is usually enough, while a large tower with distant drive bays calls for 0.75 m or 1 m.
Connector shape. A straight connector works when there is room behind the drive. In a tight case, or right next to the motherboard port, an angled connector is often needed because a straight cable bends sharply there. A latch keeps the connector from working loose, which helps if you open or move the PC often.
SATA standard. A cable made for SATA III (6 Gbit/s) also works with older SATA I and SATA II devices. When connecting a modern SSD, choose a cable that clearly states SATA III so the drive can run at full speed.
Colour and finish. In a case with a glass or acrylic window the cables are on show, so colour becomes a real consideration. Our range includes red, black, blue, yellow, transparent and multicolour cables. Colour also has a practical use: cables in different colours make it easier to tell which one goes to which drive.
Brands we carry
- DELOCK: a maker of computer connectors, cables and adapters, with the largest number of SATA cables in our range.
- LENOVO: its cables are mainly meant for Lenovo computers and suit replacing a damaged or missing original lead.
- INLINE and ROLINE: both specialise in computer and network cables and connection accessories.
- STARTECH: makes connectivity products for IT professionals, so its cables are often used in office and server environments.
- CORSAIR and SHARKOON: produce cases, power supplies and other gaming PC components, so their cables are often matched to builds with a windowed case.
- AKASA: known for CPU cooling and PC cases.
Also in our range: WENTRONIC, EXERTIS CONNECT, SHIVERPEAKS and GEMBIRD.
SATA data cable FAQ
Does a SATA data cable also carry power?
No, a SATA data cable carries data only. The drive needs a separate SATA power cable from the power supply. If the power supply has no free SATA power connectors, you will need a splitter or an adapter.
Does a SATA III cable work with older SATA II and SATA I devices?
Yes, SATA standards are backwards compatible. You can connect a SATA III cable to an older drive or motherboard, and the pair will run at the speed of the slower component.
What length of SATA cable do I need?
Measure the distance from the motherboard port to the drive and add a few centimetres of slack. For most standard cases a 0.3 or 0.5 m cable is enough. If the drive is mounted far from the motherboard, you will need 0.75 m or 1 m.
Can I use a SATA cable with an M.2 NVMe SSD?
No. M.2 NVMe drives plug straight into a slot on the motherboard and do not use a SATA cable. A SATA data cable is meant for 2.5 and 3.5 inch hard drives, SATA SSDs and optical drives.
